This is a great CD if you want a good dose of high-end Brass Band music and playing.
"Contest Music" by Heaton is a work originally rejected for use at the National Brass Band Championships in 1973 as it was too far ahead of its time. It was used some years later and has become an iconic piece of brass band writing. This is music written for a top level contest which is highly musical rather than a technical excercise (although it is a technically difficult piece!). Incredible playing of this piece by a band on top form.
"Royal Parks" - George Lloyd. Very tuneful and some great sounds. The trade mark "Black Dyke Sound" really shows in the second movement - listen for the pedal notes of BBb Bass legend Derek Jackson. ... Read More:

I would like to get this CD, because I am a Ground Force fan, and I know that The Black Dyke Band is a very famous brass band.

Being a brass player myself, and a classically trained one at that I always laughed at brass bands...until I heard this cd!!! What a sound! The Black Dyke Mills band sound is truely stunning and the cd is rounded off with the awesome sound of the finale of San Saens 3rd Organ Symphony! A definate cd for any lover of brass music!!

Though above all a lover of classical music I bought this disc because it features Elgar and Rubbra, two of my favourite composers. I did not quite know what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised with what I found. The Severn Suite, in its original arrangement for brass band, is an excellent addition to my Elgar collection. The suite sounds superb in this arrangement and compares very well with the full orchestral version. Likewise the Rubbra piece is well worth hearing and shows a different side of the composer.
I did not know the three other composers, but in each case I was impressed by well-written, satisfying music. Repeated listening to the disc only increased my enjoyment and admiration of the music.
