Johnson was a gospel blues singer whose recordings have thankfully survived from the 20's and allowed a new generation to appreciate just how great an artist he was. The intonations and sudden change in direction of his vocal style will lift and enrich you and his slide guitar technique has been the inspiration for such artists as Ry Cooder and Eric Clapton. The songs listed are all without exception of the highest quality with 'Dark Was The Night - Cold Was THe Ground' being used by Passolinni in his film 'The Gospel According To St Matthew'.
Anyone looking to find the very best in gospel and blues music must add this CD to their collection.

As a guitar player I was aware of Blind Willie Johnson before. But, I don't play slide guitar (or at least I didn't), so he was never a major influence. After attending a couple of workshops with the great Martin Simpson on whom Blind Willie Johnson has been a huge influence in terms of his slide guitar work, I took the plunge and bought this compilation. For some, his rough, gravely false bass booming voice might prove intially to be a little unapproachable. The material too is completely uncompromising. Willie Johnson was a gospel singer, probably the finest the world has ever seen or heard. But this is raw, unadulterated gospel music from the deep south. There are no frills just simple songs delivered with raw passion, involvement and commitment ... Read More:

Blind Willie Johnson was the first black gospel singer and guitarist to be recorded. His first record was 'I know His blood can make me whole' b/w 'Jesus make up my dying bed', both included here. He was born in 1902 in Marlin, Texas and began playing a cigar box guitar when he was five and said that he intended to become a preacher. He played and sang at church events and became famous for his guitar style, using a pocket knife as a slide. He sometimes used the guitar to finish a sentence instead of his voice. Eric Clapton said of his playing on 'It's nobodies fault but mine' that it is 'probably the finest slide guitar playing you'll ever hear.' By his late teens he was singing on the streets of Hearne, Texas, often accompanying a preacher. At 24 he ... Read More:

This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. You wouldn't think Willie Johnson's gruff faux-bass growl could be beautiful, but his singing, and his songs, is so incredibly powerful and sincere. His music is so melodious, and his slide guitar playing is unsurpassed even today - just listen to Johnson's pocket knife coaxing the most wonderful sounds from the steel strings on "You'll Need Somebody On Your Bond" and "It's Nobody's Fault But Mine".
This is not blues, mind you, even though there's sometimes only a fine line between 'Blind' Willie Johnson's brand of gospel and the country blues of men like Son House and Charley Patton. But gospel it is, and Johnson (and his wife) turn in fabulous renditions of "Praise God I'm Satisfied", ... Read More:
