Nine Tonight "Live!"

This 1981 live album works very well, alternating between hard rock, mid-tempo R&B-influenced pop songs and slow tunes.
Sure, the approach may be a bit similar (the rock n' roll tunes in particular sound pretty much the same), but there's a lot of quality material here.

Bob Seger plays and have always played a pretty easily recognizable blend of rock, pop & R&B, and he touches upon roots-rock and classic, Chuck Berry-style rock n 'roll as well as (slightly) more contemporary sounds.

"Nine Tonight" features the classic 50s-style R&B number "Old Time Rock & Roll", a couple of Berry-knockoffs, and an actual Berry-cover, a slightly overlong and not-too-succesful rendition of "Let It Rock" (Seger's closing number for many ... Read More:

Greatest Hits Volume 2 [Us Import]

I bought the first volume of Bob Seger's greatest hits years ago and was immediately captured by the compelling lyrics and singalong melodies, Seger's haunting squawk that falls somewhere between rock god and C&W crooner and the tight-riffin' band. So here's volume two and if it's half as good as vol 1 then you just have to buy, right?

Well, it's better than half as good. In fact, some standout tracks (Beautiful Loser, Shame on the Moon, the soundtrack piece Understanding) are on a par with anything in the vol 1 collection, while the set is augmented by some of the Silver Bullet Band's more noisy rockers (Fire Down Below, Her Strut, Katmandu and the live Tryin' To Live My Life Without You) which give a fuller picture of Bob and the band as all-round ... The Distance

This album is great in places but distinctly average in others. That said, the good far outweighs the bad on this classic album.

There are several brilliant tracks, my personal favourites being "Even now" (classic Seger), Shame on the Moon and particularly Roll Me Away. I feel it's a bit let down by Little Victories which feels like a filler track and Boomtown Blues which doesn't do it for me.

Actually, I'd give it 5 stars but it's a very short album for a single CD.

Night Moves

If you're looking for simple, straight-ahead, three-chord rock 'n' roll, Bob Seger is your man.

Most of Seger's records suffer from a lack of consistency, and many of his songs simply sound too much alike. But "Night Moves" features some of the best and most original songwriting of Seger's career, and the most varied moods as well.

It's not a perfect record, nor a particularly original one, but it's a good, solid rock album, alternating between up-tempo songs like "The Fire Down Below" and the excellent, fiery rocker "Rock And Roll Never Forgets", mid-tempo grooves like "Sunspot Baby" and "Mary Lou", and ballads like "Ship Of Fools", "Mainstreet" and the title track.

Face the Promise

I have bought most of Bob Seger's CDs ever since being given his Greatest Hits collection (which is great). He has not released a new album for many years until this one. He is back and back with a superb album. He is is great voice. The songs rock with his usual style and have real power. Highlights include No Matter Who You Are and the duet with Patty Loveless Answer The Question. He is one of rock music's greats. Recommended. Well worth buying. A great listen.

Live Bullet

One of the pre-requisites in 'rawk n roll' is the voice - and Seger has one of the finest in the business, which generally makes his recordings so good. I never bought the original 'Live Bullet' as I'd heard a few negative comments about it when it was first released (on vinyl) and even though the remaster is passable, I have to agree with 'Friendlycard' in saying that 'Nine Tonight' is a much more polished product and arguably outstanding for a live performance, which sadly IMO 'Live Bullet' is not. Hopefully the record company will take note by remastering 'NT' and provide us with another collectable rock gem.

Against the Wind: Remastered

Typical in the sense that Bob Seger's albums almost always include a number of excellent songs and a handful of forgettable ones as well.

"Against The Wind" is the last of his "classic" albums. Originally issued in 1980, it features one of Seger's very best ballads, the simple but superbly melodic "You'll Accomp'ny Me", as well as the slow rock of "Fire Lake", the title track (another ballad), and a couple of grinding rockers, most notably "Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight" and "Her Strut". And then there's all the filler...bland, formulaic numbers like "Long Twin Silver Line" and "The Horizontal Bop" (honestly!).

So, as is the case with most Bob Seger albums, this one is mostly for hardcore fans. There's a lot of good music here, but all of it is available ... Read More:
