This compilation contains some of the highlights from Bobby McFerrin's career, but is by no means comprehensive. An obvious place to start is with his massively successful hit 'Don't Worry Be Happy', which constitutes many people's only exposure to McFerrin, which is a shame as it is not representative of his best work, albeit a great song in it's own right.

The tracks on this album are a mixture of solo live recordings that are quite simply stunning, live performances with other (great) artists (like Chick Corea), and studio tracks like the afore mentioned single. The Mozart Sessions

It has been said that Mozart had every piece complete in his head to the last note before he committed anything to paper. This might be considered an argument that it's sacrilege to improvise with his music or mess with what he wrote.

I can see the argument, but I also know that I enjoy these performances very much.

The way that McFerrin's vocal introduction slides into Concerto No 23 is delightful, and would make a nice surprise to quiz music-loving friends with. Corea is of course a jazz pianist - and I am a fan of his "Children's Songs" - and it's fascinating to hear him bend his talents to repertoire that is as classical as it gets.

This is a great chance to hear Bobby McFerrin bring his unique voice to some jazz standards, and to hear Chick Corea perform harmonic magic while uncluttered and unrestricted by bass and drums (check out his solo in 'Round Midnight!). Corea is by far the superior of the two, although the electric spontaneity that McFerrin contributes inspires Corea to his greatest duo acoustic work since Gary Burton or Herbie Hancock (15 years). If you like both artists, this album is an absolute MUST. If you only like one of the two, this album will make you like the other after just a few listenings.

Circlesongs

Circlesongs has now become my favourite album. It's tracks each evoke an entirely different set of emotions. Each seems to be spiced with the influence of a different culture with the end result being an album of music which goes beyond cultural differences.

Although I personally believe that the album is 5 star and a must have, looking at the mixed reactions of the rest of my family I would say that it was an aquired taste. I would therefore reccommend listening to a few of the tracks before buying the CD.
