Future Chaos

by: Bomb The Bass

Release Date September 15, 2008
Yes, the production's slick, like you'd expect from legendary producer Tim Simenon. But the big problem with this album is, it's not 'cutting edge' at all- in fact the whole thing's a bit lacklustre and uninspired.

It's a sort of indie-electro crossover that bands like Midnight Juggernauts and The Presets are currently doing a lot better. There are hints of that electroclash attitude which make some tracks sound like they were written five years ago.

There's over-use of that rich Moog sound, making a lot of the tracks too similar, and though the bass is strong the beats are weak.

Pretty disappointing after such a long wait.

Beat Dis: the Very Best of Bomb the Bass

by: Bomb The Bass

Release Date November 06, 1999
Beat Dis is certainly not the 'greatest hits' of Bomb The Bass and doesn't quite tell the full story about DJ/producer Tim Simenon. The compilation has been put out by Sony/BMG who acquired the back catalogue of BTB's first record label - indie dance outfit Rhythm King in 1991. BTB moved to Island Records in 1994 who put out the excellent Clear album and singles - Bug Powder Dust, Darkhart, 1-2-1 Religion, Sandcastles etc. In my opinion it's probably Sony/BMG having free access to Rhythm King's back catalogue - they've done a similar compilations for S'Express and The Beatmasters and not wanting to pay Island to licence the tracks from Clear which creates flaws in this compilation. These are compounded by a rather odd choice of tracks from BTB's ... Read More:

Release Date August 01, 2002
Tim Simenon's 1995 album could be compared to Massive Attack and Portishead albums from around the same time. It's definitely got that Bristol sound, rolling dubby basslines, crisp vinyl-sounding beats. The fact it's got that feel makes it seem a bit dated but overall it's very serious but it just shines with quality from a brilliant producer. It's also good that there's a few tracks with a bit more 'kick' thrown in for good measure.

There's some high-quality guest appearances as well- Sinead O'Connor, Benjamin Zephaniah, Will Self, Justin Warfield. Well worth a listen.
