I discovered Boney James whilst over in the USA several yrs ago and am a confirmed fan! This man just keeps getting better - Sweet Thing is my all-time favourite track. Whether your'e in the mood for lurve... or driving down a busy motorway... turn up the vibes and chill, relax and your cares just float away on hearing that sax. He manages to vary the mood with each track - each one is incredible. Enjoy!!!

Forever for Always for Luther (Vandross)

If you're a Luther fan (like me) you'll have noticed this album already. At first I thought it was just another compilation of some of his best love songs, but on closer inspection it is actually the 'smooth-jazz' version.

When I say 'smooth-jazz' what I actually mean is 'muzak'. Yes, you too can own the elevator versions of some of Luther's finest. Don't get me wrong, I like smooth jazz, but these are basic cover versions (mostly without vocals other than background karaoke-style backing) and lack anything like the real depth of the originals.

Shake It Up

This is one of those albums when the first time you play it you know your money's well-spent. This couple, who I saw in rare form at the '99 Montreux jazz festival, obviously click, have a lot of fun together, and are consummate jazz musicians. The melodies are original and catchy, the changes in tempo and mood flow well, the production values are high, and the jazz is upbeat, contemporary, funky. More Sanborn than Kenny G, although I don't think you can class them as like anyone in particular. It's just good, good stuff!

Pure

Boney James has been around a good few years now and knows his trade and audience. This should be the album that takes Boney James to a wider audience due to the appearances of Bilal, Debi Nova and Dwele and their vocal contributions which are superb especially Bilals vocals on Better with Time which is a superb piece of Soul Music with Boney blowing in the background and worth the purchase alone.

Joe Sample also makes a guest appearance on Stone Groove, which lives up to its name a good groove.

Track 5 Appreciate featuring Debi Nova keeps the uptempo groove moving along nicely.

Track 6 is almost what you would expect of an Incognito track with Boney's sax at the forefront this time.

Shine

Follows on from where his previous album Pure left off, with a mixture of guest vocalists and instrumentals, I guess to try and reach a wider audience, although Boney is already big in the smooth jazz scene.

The guest list includes George Benson, George Duke, Esthero, Dwele, Faith Evans, Phillip Bailey and Anne Nesby. And you know what they say too about too many cooks, and trying to please all of the people.

I feel the best tracks on this album are the instrumentals like track 2 pumping out a funky beat with George Duke, whereas with Pure the vocal tracks were the best and it was a better balanced album.

Sorry Boney have to give this one 3 stars
