Loved this! True in spirit and execution to the memory of our beloved Bonzo's. Only thing missing of course is the great one, Vivian, now crooning lovingly to his old Victrola up in the big blue.
Complete with adverts,clarinet, tuba, banjo, songs of heartbreak, singing saw, spoon solo, nimble piano and a pinch of french for good measure.
Put on your headphones and listen to this all the way through.
It flows together seamlessly with no air between songs. doesn't it.
With pause instructions at disc's mid-way point to simulate the turning over of your old black plastic as in those farflung days.
Blithering musicanship.
Stark vocals. Lunacy. Great songs.

At last, quality reissues of all the Bonzos' albums - it's hard to believe this was the only one previously issued separately on CD. The Cornology box valiantly collected (nearly) all the previously available material into one place but these reissues are the real deal - superbly remastered and packaged, augmented with bonus tracks that are worth listening to more than twice, and featuring extremely droll sleeve notes by surviving joint chief Bonzo Neil Innes.

This is a great live cd, and it only goes to prove they real can produce every sound on there album live, the mix is fantastic and is enjoyable to listen to.

Tadpoles

"Tadpoles" is probably the most accessible of the Bonzo's albums including some of their best known songs like the singalong "Hunting Tigers Out in Indiah" and children's favourite "Monster Mash", as well as their hit "Urban Spaceman". However this is to overlook the surprising depth displayed across many of their less celebrated compositions as demonstrated on this particular album by the delicate "By a Waterfall" and brilliant variations on traditional forms in "Dr Jazz" and "Laughing Blues". "Tadpoles" ends with lead singer Vivian Stanshall's rather apt "Canyons of Your Mind" resplendent with Elvis vocals and a guitar solo so terrible it is very funny.

I've been a fan of the Bonzo's since I was given a cassette when I was about 14 of their album The Doughnuts In Granny's Greenhouse, and managed to find a copy of Keysham a few years ago.

There's very little about them on the internet, view remaining pieces of original footage from the 60's and so this 40th Anniversay concert was something I was always going to purchase and that I did.

Despite the poor reviews a few people have given it, which I feel although unfair understand their complaints I do feel that this is a better DVD than their reviews give credit for.

The History of the Bonzos

My dad introduced me to the bonzo's mad world and i fell in love with it immediately. They are such wonderful musicians and yet they can make tracks that you would think were made by a year 7's music class in a bid to impress their friends. That is probably why i feel so attached to them. Only truly brilliant musicians could probably get away with such awful music! The guitar solo in the middle of "Mr Apollo" sounds like it was played by a five year old. But this doesnt detract anything from the song!
Some tracks on the CDs don't do anything for me, such as "Hello Mabel" but these are few and far between! The good stuff really outweighs the bad here, with songs ( i use this term advisedly) such as "Hunting tigers out in Indiah", "The Intro and Outro", "I'm the Urban ... Read More:

Bestiality of Bonzo Dog Band

The quality of the Bonzo Dog Band are apparent in this album, however, I feel what this compilation lacks is the consistancy required to make a good album, as there are a few tracks from their weakest, and final album, 'Let's make up and be friendly'. This would make a better album, and would be a more fitting tribute if it stuck to the plan of putting their good songs on it, rather than the ones they were contracted to produce later in the band's career.

This 'bestiality' lacks gems such as:

Look out There's a Monster Coming! Laughing Blues Death Cab for Cutie

and other tracks from their seminal album, 'Gorilla'.

The Outro: Tadpoles/Keynsham

Speaking as someone that has suffered with bouts of depression for long periods in my life, I have to say that I wish I'd discovered the 'Bonzo's' sooner! This excellent value 2 album set, is a right hoot from start to finish and includes such an eclectic mix of musical ideas and comedy sketches that it never gets boring, even when it gets boring! HA HA HA There's a lot of fun and laughter to be had here and tracks like 'Shirt', 'Ali Baba's Camel', 'Mr Slater's Parrot' and 'Busted' are just the perfect tonic if you are feeling down. Behind the humour however, tracks like 'I Want To Be With You', demonstrate that there was a pretty nifty 'pop band'trying to get out and, on another album, the song could easily pass for a 'summer of love' classic.
