What are you thinking? "Oh no, not another female singer-songwriter!" I know, I know, they're everywhere aren't they? There were five on my bus this morning. But if some of them (including some of the higher profile ones) are pretty formulaic, or plain rubbish, Brandi Carlisle is well up the quality scale. To me this could be an album made by Beth Orton after a boozy session with Bonnie Raitt backstage at a Paul McCartney gig. So you get folky pop-rock with an abrasive element. It's pretty accessible, no bad thing, and not forgettable. Brandi Carlisle here shows good old-fashioned songwriting and performing skills. No gimmicks, plenty of talent.

I first discovered Brandi via the Amazon Vine programme that supplied me with a copy of her second album 'The Story' free of charge. It blew me away and has seldom been out of my CD player and iPod since. Research directed me to this earlier effort which has not been released in the UK. Ordered this from an Amazon partner (actual Amazon price is ridiculous). Like 'The Story' Brandi's singing is excellent in this album, but overall there are no songs that stand out as much as 'The Story' and 'Turpentine' do on the newer CD. Don't let that put you off, just order both.

Whilst collecting Missy Higgins cds Amazon recommended The Story by Brandi Carlile. Probably because both are up-and-coming Singer/Songwriters, whom rolling stone have described either Artist of the Year or Artist to Watch. So as i did with Missy Higgins without hearing any track or indeed knowing who she was i purchased The Story which apparently according to Wikipedia has gone to no 1 in Portugal. Brandi Carlile is another refreshing young talent who as with the other artist should be set for success once they have broken through in this country. Anybody who hasn,t purchased The Story should read the (45)reviews to date, i gave it a WOW.
