That Lucky Old Sun (CD/DVD)

Brian Wilson's solo career has been a fairly mixed affair with the triumphant return of Smile or the likes of Rio Grande mixed in with some poor (by his standards) album tracks.

Lucky Old Sun, however, is a great return to form for pop music's greatest composer. First performed at the Royal Festival Hall, the album version is solid from start to finish from the instant classic of "Midnight's another day" to the Beach Boys-like "Morning Beat". The spoken narratives (written by Van Dyke Parks) don't detract from the music and instead complement Brian and Scott Bennetts creation.

This is probably more accessible than "Smile" was as it's a much more coherent piece where Smile was such a leap that nobody has done anything ... Read More:

Smile

This Is my Fave album ever!
Everthing about it is perfect.
If you dont own it i swill tell you to buy it.
It's different and very very open minded.
Brian Wilson is a ledgend!
But this is the masterpiece of his life.
It's worth every year of waiting for this album to come out.
Personally Vegetables is my fave track!
It's the only album i own that i dont want to skip a track!
I just Love it.

When I first bought this album I was a little unsure about it. I had recently bought 'smile' which has is one of my favourite album ever. I was amazed when I listened to this at how good it was - if you like 'smile' you will probably like this album. Wilson's harmonies are absolutely fantastic, especially on the title track. There is a jazz sensibility about the music, kind of like the Four Freshmen. Each song is very different, cleverly written and there is a huge range of instruments. It is quite a sonic experience in itself.

There is a feel of Americana in many of the songs and an old world innocence which suits Wilson's voice and harmonies perfectly. There is also a mellow Beach Boys vibe to it. I really love this album and enjoy it ... Read More:

Gettin' In Over My Head

I have been a fan of Brian Wilson since the 60's and I feel very disappointed with this album. The melodies are "samey", showing nothing original and the lyrics for the most part are banal, I would have thought Brian would have left "love" and "Above" behind years ago, but similar rhyming appears in every song. Three quarters of the way through the album I wondered whether his friends in the studio should have pointed out how poor the material is. The presence of three other musical giants served only to suggest, embarrasingly, friends helping a pal out, rather than contibuting to something special. The one star is for the production. Sadly I don't think that I will be rushing to give this any more plays. Brian, loyal fans that buy your albums deserve better.

Having recently purchased and thoroughly loved the overdue re-issue of Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" I felt compelled to revisit Brian Wilson ,s 1988 solo album . Released after a period with notorious therapist Eugene Landy who on the album's release was given several song co-writing credits( Removed after Landy,s ejection from Wilson's life in 1991 ) the album was critically lauded but didn't do that well on the sales front. Why the hell not I feel duty bound to ask ? For while this album doesn't have the depth and wracked majesty of Dennis's album ( not that comparisons are that valid) it has a lavish pop splendour of it's own. It has tunes that would make an extremely irate scorpion sheathe its sting.

What I Really Want For Christmas

My love affair for Wilson's music knows no bounds, so imagine the anticipation I had for Christmas spent with the old master singing carols in my room. Given Brian Wilson's love of (his musical insipartion) Phil Spector's Christmas album, he's not unexpectedly gone and made his own. The arrangements are not his best, but still pleasent and better than most of his contemporaries. His backing band are second to none, and his voice has improved. However, outside of the big day itself this is not an album I'll probably listen to, much. This is not Wilson at his best, but shows promise. The future is definatly brightening for the returning master. Buy SMiLE, far better.

I Just Wasn't Made for These Times

What i like about this album is the way all the songs on it have been done the way brian wants.Songs like Wonderful, although not as good as the smile version are well produced along with other songs such as 'Do it again'. Songs which he write for the beach boys but had nor real hand in producing and he has done them the way he wants on this album, great to listen to and great for brian.
