this is GENIUS. I know it seems hard to get into but it's not really. Once you, yes dare i say it, 'get it' then you will listen to hard zappa, varese, meshuggah, like it was abba. but that is to take away from this slice of magnificent music. listen, I'm just sparing you my brothers review which will, like other reviews, indicate this as the best album ever made. For those that have difficulty on these pages, grow up. and if you want to sing along, buy clear spot.

I wanted to be cool and say i have a captain beefheart album and be cool but not actually like the music etc

Spotlight Kid, the/Clear Spot

If you've never listened to Beefheart before - forget the supremely difficult Troutmask Replica that everyone says is his best (It's not)- these two albums should be heard by everyone.
Ethnic rhythms, cajun rifts, absurdly brilliant guitar work and weird lyrics sung by a weider voice - this is simply superb. The most commercial and easily accessible of his recordings, but still some of the best music ever. Superb, brilliant etc. etc.
And if you like this, then there is Ice Cream For Crow, Bat Chain Puller, Doc at the Radar Station, and the iconic Strictly Personal. All by a brilliant musical genius.

I first heard this when it was released, in the UK, on Sunset Records, a budget label who also released the Bonzo Dog Band albums etc. This was one of the albums that nearly everybody I knew at the time had in their collection. In the late 1970s when Punk and second hand record shops arrived in Dundee this was one of the albums that people couldn't give away. In that era peopel were casting off their previous music collections and getting rid of anything Prog Rock or Hippy, this album falling into the latter category.

I deeply resented being told that I shouldn't like all the stuff I liked before so I clung on my own judgement and still consider this as a classic, not just of Beefheart's career but I would put it in my top 10 1960s albums, and there ... Read More:

Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller): 2006 Remaster

I grew up with my older brother bringing new, interesting and sometimes disturbing or challenging sounds into our house. The good Captain fell into the later category but although it was challenging to my young ears I absorbed it and began to really like it. The problem really lay in the fact that it was HIS music and not mine.

Later, after the ironically titled Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans and Moonbeams seemed to signal the Captains decline I came across this, Shiny Beast on its release. This was my own Captain Beefheart album and it was terrific!

To my old chum Paul Harisson, when we started to discover the pure music that is Captain beefheart? Not as arhythmic as Troutmask or as overproduced as the still-wonderful Strictly personal ( and how I wish i hadn't swapped the divers-bell gatefold album for Led Zep II), but the first time that I realised there was music inside strange sounds, and outside of the bubblegum crap that was, and still is, most popular music.

So with mind-boggling circularity I bought this album on a recommendation based on the recommendation of my much younger self. And they say Philip K Dick is all fiction.

Blue Jeans and Moonbeams: 2006 Remaster

I must agree with several other reviewers that this album is very underrated. Ok, its no Safe as Milk, Clear Spot or Lick My Decals.. but Blue Jeans and Moonbeams has much to cherish. I first heard it in the early 80's and liked it very much. Now listening to it, I still find it has excellent, even classic Beefheart moments. Yes, there are a couple of weak tracks. But I for one can forgive that when there are some really great moments. The guitar solo on Further Than We've Gone brings me to tears. I am not sure whether it is Zoot Horn Rollo playing but it's one of my favourite guitar solos. The title track is equally moving along with Observatory Crest. Then for a change of mood you have Party of... and Same old Blues and Rock and roll's Evil Doll. For Beefheart fans or newbies to the ... Read More:
