I must admit I hadn't heard much Charlie Parker before buying this album as an introduction to bebops founder and one of the world's finest saxophonists to date. After listening to both CD's in this double set right through various times I was addicted and I'm sure I shall buy much more of his work very soon. Many of the bebop enthusiasts I know agreed that the choice of song's on this album were very well selected and clearly outline the saxophonists different stages in his musical career. I recommend this album to diehard bebop fans and everyone else alike either to hear the amazing musicianship, unpressedented composing skills or just to know where every musician in the world hs gained some kind of influence. Pure Genious!!!

Bought this for myself, and my 16 year old son and his mate have borrowed it and play it all the time, they think it's 'really cool'. Just shows good music has appeal for all age ranges.

Complete Jazz at Massey Hall

This is one of the classic jazz recordings. The quintet consisted of Charlie Parker on sax, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Charles Mingus on bass, Bud Powell on piano and Max Roach on drums. The lead-up to the concert itself was apparently a bit of a shambles, but the music is pretty amazing.

In a Soulful Mood

Some 79 minutes of material that is full of life and Byrds' ingeniousity. Each and every tune here is catchy and drives you into the mood. (Couple of them have two different takes one after the other, still it doesn't get boring!). Value for money here is unbeatable!!!

Charlie Parker With Strings

These recordings often were and are looked down upon by jazz 'purists'.

These recordings are the ones that Charlie Parker was most proud of.

When he was dying, he played his doctor his recording of 'Just Friends'. The version is absolutely beautiful. His alto rises over the strings like a bloom from a flowerbed.

'Everthing Happens To Me', 'Laura', and 'Out Of Nowhere' are similarly overlooked gems in his body of work.

The recently included live recordings are a joy to the ears.

Recommended unreservedly.

Jazz At Massey Hall

This recording is an essential addition to any serious Jazz collection, capturing as it does five Jazz giants recorded together for the one and only time.

Charlie Parker is on Alto Sax, Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet, Bud Powell Piano, Charles Mingus bass and Max Roach on drums. From the first number "Perdido" you know this something special. A medium tempo version which never stops swinging. Gillespie in particular is in fiery form on this number. On "Salt Peanuts" Bud Powell plays a memorable solo, which precedes a thunderous drum solo from Max Roach.

The atmosphere is fantastic with the crowd applauding the musicians solos, and sometimes you can hear the musicians cajoaling each other to better performances.

"Charlie Parker At Storyville" was originally recorded for radio broadcast, and aired on WHDH in Boston in 1953. The sound quality is excellent, even as good as some of his studio recordings from the late 40s. The disc's nine tracks feature two different bands (Red Garland, Billy Griggs and Roy Haynes on the first four cuts, and Herb Pomeroy, Charles Thompson, Jimmy Woode and Kenny Clarke on the remaining selections), which seems odd considering the jacket indicates this recording was from one date, September 22, 1953. In any event, the music is timeless and it is only fitting that the one Bird disc in the Blue Note catalog is truly a classic.
