White Blues

Up until recently I used to have a time on a Monday afternoon where I had to sit down, concentrate and get on with some paper work. This was often my cd of choice. Instead of being in my office at work I was transported to a jazz bar in New York, relaxing and enjoying myself. That was my happy place, to help me get through the paper work. Soon people were asking me if they could borrow this cd because they also found it to be the musical version of someone stroking your head.

My Funny Valentine

I cannot believe how cheap this cd is. This is truly a wonderful album that is up there with my other favourite Chet cds and yet it has a bargain basement price. If you buy it I promise you wont be disappointed.

Broken Wing

A very good recording from December 1978, further proof that Baker hadn't lost it (in fact, he would continue to record some of his best albums in the years after this).

The interplay with Phil Markowitz on piano and Jean-François Jenny-Clark on bass is wonderful; Richie Beirach's "Broken Wing" and Wayne Shorter's "Brown Eyes" have rarely ever been played more beautifully.

Re-released in the very competitively priced "Jazz in Paris" series, this is more than well worth its money.

Chet's playing is inventive and expressive, and the album is worth buying for the song "Alone Together" on its own.... rarely have I heard so much feeling in a horn player's tone... I've lost count of the number of times I've played that track... it is never anything less than beautiful.

Embraceable You

There is a purpose for space, it allows us to view what is not otherwise apparent and when the musical equivalent of reading between the lines is applyed to this recording one is offered a multitude of reflections. Chet Baker was well known for being sparing with muscal statements, but on this collection of recordings he goes one step further, almost implying more than what is actually said. Like a good book, it sets the scene perfectly but allows enough room for the listener (or reader) to enjoy a little creativity of their own. David Wheat builds hauntingly subtle chordal webs upon Ross Savakus' delicate bass framework, allowing Chet to take each tune breath takingly close to colapsing.

probably his best live recording ever! check out his trumpet solo on my funny valentine. the concert was originally avaliable on two separate records:memories &four. if you like chets fragile later work then this is a must have you will not be disappointed.
