In the days before "The Lady in Red" and its bundle of insipid follow-ups, Chris de Burgh was a songwriter with flair and originality. A modern-day descendant of the travelling minstrels of yesteryear, de Burgh perfected the art of storytelling in song, finding equal inspiration from the Celtic tradition and the era of flower power when being a folk singer was something to be proud of. "Spanish Train and Other Stories" was de Burgh's second album, and certainly his creative peak.

Into The Light

As far as albums go, this one by Chris De Burgh is probably one of the best ones of the 1980's. Not only does it feature "The Lady In Red" but it also features some outstanding tracks. Among them are "Last Night", about a man walking through a harbour town as word spreads that their soldiers are coming home from war. Possibly one of the best opening tracks I've heard.

Also, a couple of favourites include "Fatal Hesitation", a lovely and delicate song, "The Ballroom of Romance" and "One Word (Straight To The Heart)". Although all the songs on here are of top quality and some of the finest he has written.

Now And Then

Chris has still not yet successfully translated his strong talent from 80s pop / ballad to the modern era.

Its doubtful that this is going to happen now, unless Chris strikes out a new direction, takes a risk, rather than simply allowing himself to relax back in the sofa whilst he earns a living by "publishing nostalgia".

Come on Chris. Jump out of the cupboard, like your first "gig", and suprise us all. We're ready to buy it, but only if its genuinely, freshly, you...

The Getaway

A lot of this album and the one he had just released, was sung at an "exclusive" night we enjoyed in Glasgow a couple of years' ago.

Pity we couldn't get him to sing Patricia The Stripper but hey-ho: a good night.

SPARK TO A FLAME

i bought the us/canada release of this for my dad's birthday i was expecting it to be some old crap that i wouldnt like but when he played it i was blown away by the amazing songs on it and how powerful they effect you, i can remember i was about 12 and he played "patrica the stripper" and i used to sing a long word by word, but my favourite song ever by him was " don't pay the ferryman" its totally a rock ballad and has such power and its an addictive song it always reminds me of me n my dad singing along in the car *memories*, if anyone hasnt bought it yet i suggest you do because it's worth more than what you pay for it! XX

Crusader

This CD is definately one of CdB's best. "Carry on" is a really lovely song, a really great tune with really strong vocals, especially through the chorus. "I had the love in my eyes" is a song quite a few of us can relate to. The French Horn solo at the end of it is so so beautiful, although i may be a bit biased considering I too play the French Horn. "The Girl with April in her Eyes" is CdB at his best, telling a moving story and putting it to such a wonderful tune. "The Devil's Eye" is an amazing song, such a good idea and so original! It came off superbly as always! The only other really outstanding song is "Crusader". This tells the story of the crusades in about five tunes, all so different but all powerful.

its so annoying i like this, i know its rubbish everytime i hear any of the tracks i want to hit myself in the face because for some unknown reason i love it. i've tried to figure it out and i'm down to two possible explanations either i was taken as a child and made to listen to this relentless passionless tripe until i like it or its actually really good! i think option one is more likely but there you go! make ur own mind up.

Far Beyond These Castle Walls

My introduction to Chris came about like this. A wet Sunday afternoon in Glasgow, to see Supertramp. Concert starts over an hour late, with the crowd kept waiting outside in the rain and cold. Remember this is a Glasgow audience, harsh critics at the best of times. Imagine it; we're finally in our seats, cold and wet through, when the 'support act' appears. It's only a guy with a guitar, dredged up from a bargain bin somewhere: you can sense the crowd lick its lips: he's dead meat already. He sings his first song, after which there's almost complete silence, broken only be a few ragged handclaps. Flying Colours

I never would have thought I would be such a fan of a Chris De Burgh album than I am. This is the first and only album of his that I own, but I am definitely going to buy more. I love just about all of the songs on this album, from my favourite 'Just a word away' about his son, to 'Leather on my shoes' about travelling down the freedom road...
This album is possibly one of my favourite albums and is just so enjoyable to listen to. Please buy it!
