Trespasser

This record is simply one of the most magnificent works by a solo artist I have heard in my life.

Chris has the ability to imbue his music with a deep pathos, nostalgia and timelessness and his musicianship is sublime - his guitar playing especially, I find to be outstanding (I'm a folk guitarist myself). I defy anyone not to be moved by songs such as 'summerfield avenue', 'england in ribbons' and 'the lady of York'. In short, this is quite possibly the finest contemporary folk album available.

As an unfortunate postcript, please ignore the 1-star reviewer(s) who have decided to burn / throw away this cd due to Chris apparently making negative comments about the Beatles. I seem to recall similar hysterical behaviour ... Read More:

The Lark Descending

I'd heard lots about this album from friends. I managed to miss Chris twice at Towersey festival last year due to the sheer volume of people packing out the events.

I have to admit that this album took a little while to grow on me, but there are some incredibly addictive and thoughtful numbers on this solo album. Highlights for me are 'Hard', 'Albion' and the splendid 'One in a Million'.
Some of the other tracks borrow influence from Martin Carthy in terms of repertoire (and guitar tuning), but these are expertly delivered. Chris Wood seems to have a knack of making songs sound incredibly easy to sing, and his own compositions sit well with the ballads that have been around for 100's of years.

First, let's get one thing straight: This is not really an unreleased solo album by former Traffic member Chris Wood. Rather, this is a collection of material that Wood (who died in 1983 at age 39) recorded in the process of *trying* to make a solo album. And while some of this material would certainly have appeared on such an album had it been made, said album never came close to being finished.

Wood managed to have too much, and yet not enough, material for his proposed album -- too much, because all his potential song ideas wouldn't have fit on one LP; not enough, because few of the songs could really be said to have been finished. He himself never seems to have been sure just what pieces he would have included.
