It's quite amazing just how much the Filth have managed to fit on this Pandora's box of an album. Not only do you get the bog standard extras such as videos, wallpapers and one or two bonus tracks - oh no - this Special Edition gives you a making of documentary, a dozen remixes, 4 new Cradle originals, 2 new covers and a frickin mixing programme so you can have a go at being your very own PC DJ. And if that wasn't enough, the bonus CD is actually the standard version of the album so those who don't have it yet get to see what they've been missing. A fabulous purchase for an inspirational album. I definitely recommend buying this edition, even if you have the first release as there is so much more to this album. Happy listening!

It's a bit softer than their other albums, and the songs aren't as fun to listen to either. And the lyrics can be weak at points, but other songs (Guilded C*nt, Nymphetamine Fix, English Fire) make up for that. However, overall, it is not as good as their previous albums or their newest ones. If you're just getting into Cradle, though, this might be a good one to get if you're not accustomed to really thrashy stuff. Then, after this, you can get Thornography and work your way back from Damnation & A Day. So...yeah. This is a good introduction to metal and COF, but if you're already a fan of both, it's got it's strong points and it's (very) weak points...

The first Cradle of Filth album I bought was 'Midian', which I was very impressed by. After reading some reviews I decided to buy 'Cruelty And The Beast'. However, due to a mix up I received this album instead. So I thought "What the hell? I might aswell listen to it!". Little did I know that my taste in music would be changed so dramatically by this album.
The first thing I noticed was the contrast between the production on this album and on Midian. The "wall of sound" on Midian is replaced by a sparse sonic landscape. The guitars are fuzzy, the bass cold, the drums tight; all backed by keyboards, brimming with elegance. The vocals Dani produced on this album are raw, more true to the 'black metal' that was beginning to surface ... Read More:

I'm amazed that a band so young could produce a work so accomplished as Dusk and Her Embrace. Cradle Of Filth are a band I've grown to love over the years and this release is definitely top of their discography. The eerie but beautiful intro of Humana Inspired To Nightmare is one of the best Cradle openers and sets the mood perfectly for the rush of heaviness on Heaven Torn Asunder. Dani Filth's vocals are the most evil I've ever heard, in fact I'd say this was the album he pushed himself to the limit on. The guitar melodies and riffs are amazingly good and where the odd solo appears it's a joy to listen (see if you can hear the nod to Iron Maiden of a few of them). The drumming is tight and precise as I've ever heard and the vocal passages and backing ... Read More:

This feels a litle too mainstream for me musically, with it's foot too much rooted in the Iron Maiden sound (Vocals aside, which are still Eeurgghh & Grrrr!!).
There's nothing actually bad as such - production & playing is fine but it's the songwriting that just doesn't engage me. And it's a shame that there's been no real orchestra since Damnation And A Day :-(
Cemetery And Sundown is quite a decent song with a really good, Gothic style chorus, and the instrumental, Rise Of The Pentagram at least rises above the mainstream material. The cover of Temptation is actually quite good but not in the same league as Therion's Summernight City!
Basically not a bad album but not a classic either!

Whatever your views on this band, I'd urge anyone who is into Symphonic Metal to not miss out on this!
I'm no expert on the band; the only other CD I have is Thornography. Of the 2 albums, I MUCH prefer this one (I found Thornography lacking apart from 2 or 3 songs).
What elevates this is the major use of the 80 strong Budapest Film Orchestra and Choir - this is the only COF album, that uses a REAL full orchestra, due to Sony Music coughing up the cash to fulfill the band's symphonic ambitions. It's awesome in arrangement, performance & production, REALLY complimenting the music. Seriously dark & demonic, totally at one with the album's 'Paradise Lost' Concept.
You tend to get approx. 2 minute, orchestral interludes between songs as well ... Read More:

Well, I think so anyway. I want everyone who likes metal to hear this album. Where to start?
This album sees COF at one of their two career peaks (the other being the ambitious and flawlessly executed epic Damnnation And A Day, 7 years later). Before Vempire there was The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, another one those records that 'purists' like to pretend they like even though anyone with ears can hear that its just a badly produced 50-odd minutes of nonsense with comedy keyboards and indecipherable vocals. Post-Vempire Cradle went a different direction, firstly with the slighty-TOO-gothic Dusk... And Her Embrace, then with the self deprecating Cruelty And The Beast and From The Cradle To Enslave releases, before getting back on the right path with 2000's ... Read More:

As satanic as anything need be, Cradle of Filth is a black metal ensemble from Suffolk, England, who's managed to keep it extreme while being wildly popular internationally. They may be the most popular black metal band in the world because they've managed to break away from the genre's relatively small cult following and successfully infect all sorts of disaffected teenagers, especially in Europe. They never veer drastically from the usual black metal staples: movie monster-type vocals, lots of high-pitched screams, indecipherable lyrics, and relentless, punishing riffs. But Midian has its fair share of melody too. (Most of the finest metal does have some element of melody.) Midian begins with a chorus of what sounds like some evil monks chanting. The album is at its very best ... Read More:
