Crassly dismissed by some as mere Isis copyists, Swedish eight-piece Cult of Luna have been plying their apocalyptic, post-metal wares for some time now; having released their self-titled debut in 2001, they are now on album number five - one more than their Californian-based counterparts - and Eternal Kingdom marks a further evolvement of the band's sound. Granted, it may lack the sheer sonic vastness of that first album and its flawless follow-up, 2003's The Beyond, and it doesn't quite match the crushing emotional intensity of Salvation. Nevertheless, it retains many of the features of all three records (notably, the distinctive if slightly one-dimensional vocals and the slow, build-to-climax song structures) as well as building on the experimentalism ... When the topic of discussion turns to heavy metal, it often seems to be the case that I choose, or rather am forced to take the sidelines, being someone that could never be described as a 'metal fan.' However I will choose a more tender approach. I first got into Cult of Luna in 2003 with their 'The Beyond' release. I had recently got involved with bands such as Neurosis and Isis and they fitted in nicely alongside them. However last year, when I went to Roskilde I was somewhat blase about seeing them. I just thought they would be a pleasant alternative to Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was wrong. They were so much more. The minute they came on, basked in red light, four individuals, their guitars siloheted in the smoke, I knew it was going to be special. The main reason for this was the fact that they played ... I got into Cult Of Luna when The Beyond came out, and that album blew me away. As soon as I heard that the quite dificult to buy, first album was being re-released i bought it straight away. It is everything you would expect to hear from COL, yet i dont feel it is as good as The Beyond. A worthy buy espescially with songs like To Be Remembered that blow you away. This is an album for people who want something, heavy and original. Also check out Isis and Cubic Space Division...
