This CD contains relaxing, beautiful music that will chill you out and help you forget about life's stresses. The music is quite magical and could be the soundtrack to many nature/ocean programmes you see on TV. There are some haunting human voices in places that will remind you of Clannad/Enya. Each track has its own soothing quality, some working more than others.

With UTOPIA LIMITED Gilbert and Sullivan returned to the Savoy (in partnership) after a gap of almost four years. Following the premiere of their previous work (THE GONDOLIERS, December 1889) they had become involved in a bitter law suit in which Gilbert had opposed D'Oyly Carte over the expenses incurred in the provision of a new carpet for the foyer of the Savoy Theatre. Sullivan sided with Carte - something Gilbert would never fully forgive.
UTOPIA is quite a different libretto to those Gilbert wrote in 1892 (HASTE TO THE WEDDING with George Grossmith and THE MOUNTEBANKS with Alfred Cellier), it is openly satirical of everything English and even takes pop-shots at D'Oyly Carte in the character of Mr Goldbury, the company promotor, ... I didnt like this CD at all!! I found it made me very agitated and unable to focus & relax when trying to meditate.
Another reviewer made a valid point that it is hard to find something suitable for each individual. So I have leant the CD to a couple of friends & they said the same
I Do not recommend this cd!! Especially for people just starting out, as when your a beginner, it can be quite hard to learn how to relax & meditate properly, and this CD certainly wont help!!!

This is an absolutely stunning CD. Hummel is becoming ever more widely known and this CD proves that he was a composer of very great stature. The recording itself is one on Naxos's best. The performances are lively and alert and very atmospheric. The trumpets and timpani are thrillingly prominent and the singing is impressive too.
The Te Deum is immensely attractive but in a rugged and brilliant way. The Mass in C has more introspective moments but likewise has some thrilling moments. These pieces are the equal of any Haydn Mass and the Mass in C of Beethoven does not seem such an isolated masterpiece after hearing the Hummel.
Naxos are to be highly congratulated at producing such a superb CD at such an unbeatable price.

Caveat Emptor! Amazon cheerfully lists singers on pieces which are purely orchestral. A little more attention to detail would remove disappointment !

Utopia has never been a huge favourite in the G&S canon. There are echoes of previous works in words and music. BUT there is much that is memorable, including the entrance of the first life guards, the ensemble at the end of the Act I finale, the comic 'A Tenor All Singers Above', the Minstrels' song and 'Eagle High'. The recording is OK - bearing in mind it is the only one available - but some of the tempi could do with speeding up and the chorus diction (and that of Lyndsie Holland as Lady Sophy) is not as good as other DC recordings. It's enjoyable, but doesn't quite sparkle. The extras - Imperial March, Macbeth, Marmion and Victoria & Merrie England suite - all highly polished and impressive.
