I've yet to work out how a man so obsessed with morbidity can manage to go through daily life, let alone make a record as masterful as David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Hertz just two years later. But it happened, and my world has been a brighter/darker place because of it. So this is where it all started, then, the debut; overarching guitar noise, vocals loops violently spiralling away from even your peripheral vision, unwritten lyrics that delve deep into so many thoughts that never should be thought: death, cannibalism, broken loves, rape - funereal folk of the high order. Yes, this is David Thomas Broughton. Assuming he survives long enough, he could be the unsung, unheralded genius figure of this decade. Except we are not ready, I feel.

It's in There Somewhere

One day, David Thomas Broughton you will be a star. 2007 seems to have been a good year for the Leeds based songwriter, releasing this impressive solo album, and followed by a split EP with fellow Leeds band, 7 Hertz near the end of the year (which is equally impressive). Atmospherically this record is a big improvement on 2005's The Complete Guide To Insufficieny, with a greater use of looped sounds - guitars, harmonica, vocals - but without getting lost in the sticky fog of disorder, which overwhelms some other records (parts of Islaja's Ulual YYY) and not in a good way (unlike Kemialliset Ystävät's self-titled release). Instead, the looped sounds merely add a touch of the uncanny - you recognise some of the sounds, but they merely flutter beneath ... Read More:
