I have two Devotchka albums, this one and A Mad and Faithful Telling, and I have given both several months of listening. The latter took some time but it grew on me and I like every single track, something that is rare for me.
Unfortunately, as much as I would like to, I cannot say the same for this album. The simple fact is that there are too many average and below tracks on this album, it's too hit and miss.
The opener falls well short of Devotchka standards and it's followed by two better but still not good enough tracks (track 3 is a 25 second interlude). The fifth and title track is a great ballad dominated by Urata's distinctive vocals, and full of emotion that we come to expect from the band but to wait till ... Read More:

Devotchka ( The name is taken from the film "A Clockwork Orange" and translates as little girl) were responsible for my favourite album of last year -except that it was originally released in 2004. How It Ends is a giddy mixture of imprecise Eastern tones performed with tangible relish and gusto. The band have gained more of a following through their appearance on the soundtrack of underwhelming indie film "Little Miss Sunshine" yet are still no where near as huge as they should be.
Devotchka are a quartet from Denver Colorado and offer their lucky listeners
an intoxicating concoction of Romany, Greek, Slavic and South American-influenced sounds stirred by the distractingly mordant voice of front man Nick Urata and mysteriously ... Read More:

I'm a sucker for a sousaphone.
Seriously, I can only think of one other band that even mentions a sousaphone anywhere in their information, and that's the Decemberists. DeVotchKa are like the mysterious, grown-up, better-looking older brother of that band, with a much more subtle pop sensibility, less stage-y lyrics and a much less annoying vocalist.
On this album, they combine wildly danceable songs, like "C'est Ce La" and "Ocean of Lust" with more introspective tracks, such as my personal favorite, "Queen of the Surface Streets" and "Commerce City Sister." The album switches from dark and brooding to heartfelt to drunk and dancing, without any given part contradicting any other.
"Una Volta" is a wonderful album, in my ... Read More:

The Devotchkas may have a terrible moniker, but dont let that put you off. This album is great. Their sound could be likened to Lunachicks (the kind of music, not the lyrical content) etc, and the singer has a voice reminiscent of Alison from Discount. The songs are songs you can relate to, "Psuedo Personality", "Gone Crazy" and "Wicked Heart" being among the best. Likened to The Distillers, I disagree. That is a flawed comparison in my opinion. The extra tracks ("Burping" and "Talking") should also make you laugh, especially the burping one hehe. A really cool album from a really promising band.
