There's another customer review of this album on Amazon.co.uk, where the reviewer mentions he's glad that On The Border wasn't his first experience of the Eagles, otherwise it would have been his last. I'd like to offer a flipside: this was my first experience of their music. One day in 1980, my mother came back from town with this album on cassette, which she'd picked up on special offer from WHSmith. I was five years old at the time and hadn't formed any real musical taste, other than listening to various LPs my parents owned and watching the chart music on Top Of The Pops. I'd never heard of the Eagles before, and my mother really just picked it up on a whim. She certainly didn't say anything like "Yes, this is the band that made Hotel ... Read More:

The first Eagles album is also one of their best. The two major hits, 'Take It Easy' and 'Peaceful Easy Feeling' are the bait, but are not especially typical of the album as a whole. They are the easy listening pop items, mild songs couched in lush, attractive harmonies and textures. Almost everything else on the album is more interesting and offers more to bite on. 'Witchy Woman', with its gritty, native American flavour offers more colour. 'Train Leaves Here This Morning' is the other big highlight. Bernie Leadon brought this song with him from Dillard and Clark's fine debut album The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark...Plus. Its gentle pace belies a mischievous, intriguing, drug-connotated lyric.

I would be tempted to describe this album as a 'lost classic' since it started as a minor independent release by two college roommates in 2003 and has steadily developed a cult following. People will continue to look back to this album while one half of Department of Eagles, Dan Rossen, continues to garner acclaim for his wholly different latterday project Grizzly Bear (who release ghostly, psychedelic folk on Warp). The Cold Nose is one of several guises and monikers for this record which was also released as 'Whitey on the Moon UK', the name of the band before they were forced to change it owing to copyright infringement. The various versions of this album are available on Amazon, though the best must be the imported version on its original US record label, ... Read More:

The 70's was a decade of excellent music, where creativity was at it's peak and for alot of groups good songwriting was at the forefront.
The quality of this group astounds me. The reason I went for this album is because the title track is catchy, but meaningful. My other favourites are Hollywood Waltz (superb lyrics, that really sums up some people), Lyin' Eyes (A superb classic), Visions (great rock song) and After the Thrill is Gone (a beautiful, apt song that instantly struck a chord with me). The whole group write, sing and play such fantastic songs and they all possess decent singing voices.
Unlike some groups the Eagles sing with feeling and you can tell they mean what they sing. It's no wonder Lyin' Eyes won ... Read More:

'The Long Run' has often been seen as the most enigmatic Eagles album, and many - including, at the time, myself - found it a bit disappointing. A longish time had elapsed since 'Hotel California', and this album seemed much less imediately accessible. True, you had some classic, hit-material songs ('Heartache Tonight', 'The Long Run') but a lot of the album seemed out of kilter with the band as we'd hitherto known them.
In fact, 'The Long Run' was a wholly logical next step in a process which had taken the Eagles from a country-rock band into the rock mainstream. The political awareness which had been present in 'On The Border', 'One of these Nights' and 'Hotel California' (especially in 'The Last Resort') became much more overt here and, with this, the music ... In terms of consistency I would say this is the best Eagles album. All the songs are great and the whole album can be listened to without having to forward past the odd filler - which IMHO can't be said for any other Eagles album.
My second favourite album would probably be One Of These Nights. Sure Hotel California is a great album (Hotel is one my all time favourite songs) but Desperado and One Of These Nights for me these definately have the edge overall. I'm also in total agreement with one of the other reviewers - the Doolin Dalton reprise at the end is magic!
