Launched into the spotlight with thier mammouth cross-over hit "Missing" (Thanks to a genius re-work by legendery Todd Terry), Everything But The Girl became somewhat reclusive with thier subsequent albums following "Amplified Heart". With this relase, one that didn't obtain nearly as much commercial success as it desserved, they bring perfection to thier previously often flawed 'Emotive Electro' style. As always, Tracey Thorn's vocals are perfect. At a time when gushing diva-esque vocalists with a range larger than Mariah Carey's were all the rage in dance music, Thorne's vocals provided (and still provide) a breath of fresh air. It's her stunning tone and the quality of her voice that is so outstanding rather ... Read More:

personally i'm not concerned that this release will only contain 12 tracks, as it is listed as a double cd (as all Collector's Editions are). hopefully we'll get all the tracks from both the US and UK releases, which will comprise basically all of the b-sides and bonus tracks from the singles. the first peel sessions from 18 Aug 1984 are relevant (Ballad Of The Times, Riverbed Dry, Never Could Have Been Worse, Don't You Go), and hopefully will be included also. i'm thinking that the bbc might have recorded a show around that time also. this is all just wishful thinking; i'll just be happy to get this marvelous album in a better mastering than the original job. what worries me is that it keeps getting pushed back. according to the release dates ... I love this album. Tracey Thorn is one of the very best of British female singers, but this is the only EBTG collection where the songs really do justice to the voice. I have tried and tried with the other albums but cannot get past even a couple of tracks, but this is suburb throughout. You will listen to this again and again.
Release Date October 28, 1996
Not the very best of EBTG, but the stand out tracks for me are: Missing, Apron Strings, I don't want..., Driving and Protection.
Gives a good insight into EBTG world, but for a complete look you need to get the albums that make up this collection.
A good attempt though, just not good enough...
Release Date October 30, 1995
Easily the best record this band did (do they still exist?). Has space for music rather than the interminable remixes that just clog up the brain and keep the tills singing. Rollercoaster and Missing are highlights but the melodies are strong throughout. Respect.
Release Date October 01, 1999
I'm no fan of their later dance-style, but this early work hits the spot for me. Tracey's voice is a treat to listen to, and the arrangements complement the songs perfectly. Goodbye Sunday and I Always Was Your Girl are favourites, as well as the Danny Whitten classic I Don't Want To Talk About It, but there are no weak songs. The only thing I would change is Ben singing on The Night I Heard Caruso Sing - he's not a bad singer but I'd rather hear Tracey any day.
Release Date March 14, 2005
Being a fairly young person I was not so familiar with the EBTG back catalogue. I loved Missing,Wrong and a track that Tracey done with Massive attack called Protection. So I thought that I would take a chance and the remix album. I have to say this is one of the best albums I have brought this year.I agree with the the other customer who said "It really does leave you wanting more."
Release Date October 01, 1999
I love this album would have had 5 stars if only the track "heaven help me" wan't missing - you should buy this in the US version and get the two extra tracks
Release Date April 23, 2001
In my opinion this ranks up there with MJ Cole, Groove Armada and Faithless as one of the best albums in the Back to Mine series.
This is a brilliantly conceived album and superbly showcases the musical inspirations behind a very influential musical duo. The mix has all the right ingredients for a chill out album from the beautiful intro courtesy of DJ Cam right through to the end of the CD with Someday We'll All Be Free from Donny Hathaway. In between we have great tracks from Carl Craig, Model 500, The Roots and Dubtribe Sound System. The stand out track for me however is the haunting vocals provided by Beth Orton laid ontop of an EBTG inspired beat - brilliant!!!
As I've said this is one of the best in the Back to Mine series, a pure classic of ... Read More:
