Release Date November 27, 2000
This is not the band at its greatest - that was yet to come. But this is essential listening if you are interested in Fletcher Henderson. The tracks are catchy and fun, and its interesting to hear early Coleman Hawkins, not showing much sign of the greatness to come, as he burbles away, mostly on bass saxaphone. And not too many corny vocals!

Robert Parker's first Henderson compilation threads its way through his output during the period by concentrating in the main on those recordings issued on the main Columbia label. So no complaints there, because there's not a dud track amongst them, and the earliest include Louis Armstrong, who left at the end of 1925. There's a full discography (including take numbers), and a good liner note. This was a ground-breaking series when it first came out, but I've held back from awarding a full 5 stars, simply because 16 tracks was short measure when this CD was first released by the BBC, and in the 20 years that have elapsed playing times have increased by 25%.

Anyone wanting an introduction to Henderson could do worse than to come at him by way of this RCA Bluebird reissue, which samples the period from April 1927 to August 1936. The tracks reveal the kaleidascopic nature of the band's arrangements, which displayed the talents within the band to great effect. Its value to a more seasoned collector is that it features three takes that have not appeared previously, and four which made their first appearance in LP form. Of particular interest is Rex Stewart's salute to Bix Beiderbecke (recorded just over 3 months before the latter's death) by way of a note-for-note recreation of his solo on "Singin' The Blues". Coleman Hawkins is in evidence throughout, but amongst others Henry Red Allen, Roy Eldridge, ... Read More:

I owned these recordings when they came out on two Parlophone LPs, and was delighted to find them re-reissued on this Disques Swing double CD. The pseudonym was used for the recordings that Henderson made for the cut-price Harmony label, but there's nothing cut-price about their content. Cornetists included Rex Stewart, Tommy Ladnier, and Bobby Stark, trombonists Charlie Green, Benny Morton, and Jimmy Harrison, Buster Bailey, Coleman Hawkins, and Don Redman were on reeds, and the latter also arranged and sang, and Kaiser Marshall was on drums. All 33 sides are here, sound quality is better than acceptable, and the fold-out liner contains discography, band photograph, and notes by Frank Driggs.
