The Byrds underwent many line-up changes but the line-up that recorded the classic Sweethearts of the rodeo album didn't last long even by Byrds' standards. Two of its key members, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, quit and formed the Flying Burrito Brothers. This twofer contains their first two albums.
The first album, Gilded Palace of Sin, is regarded as a landmark album in the evolution of country-rock, almost as important as Sweethearts of the rodeo. Despite the label country rock, this album actually contains a few soulful ballads. On this album, the group comprised Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Sneeky Pete Kleinow and Chris Ethridge. Most of the songs are originals, though the album also includes brilliant covers of Dark end of ... Read More:

What a fantastic reissue from Raven. Two somewhat underrated albums on 1 CD and Gene Clark's sublime 'Here Tonight' thrown in for good measure. An absolute must for fans of classic 1970's West Coast country rock.
Whilst 'The Flying Burrito Bros' was recorded after Gram Parsons left for a solo career, the wonderfully versatile but low profile Chris Hillman took over leadership duties and contributed some great songs and sweet vocals. Rick Roberts came in on guitar/vocals and on this set contributed his signature 'Colorado' - a lovely rural song with multilayered harmonies that fits this new FBB incarnation like a glove. At times more polished, at others more rock than the brilliant 'Gilded Palace of Sin' or the erratic follow up 'Burrito ... Read More:

This post-humous collection of Gram Parsons recordings was originally released in 1976 - 3 years after his death. 9 tracks are Flying Burrito Brothers recordings from early 1970 and 3 tracks were recorded during the "Grievous Angel" sessions. The 3 later tracks are duets with Emmylou Harris.
There are no Parsons originals included. The Burritos were planning to record a whole album of "pure and honest" country music. Most tracks are pleasant, but nothing extraordinary.
Parsons had a good voice for country music, but this collection does not give the answer to how he could become a legend in country-rock. There are some fine vocal harmonies with Chris Hilmann and with Emmylou Harris things rarely go completely wrong.

This 2 cd set was recorded at the Avalon Ballroom San Francisco in April 1969 while the Burrito's were support act to the Grateful Dead. Never released to the public before, the tapes of the two concerts (April 4 and April 6 1969) had been locked in the Dead's extensive vault for nearly 40 years under the watchful eye of Owsley Stanley aka Bear.... (The excellent booklet (luxury) liner notes will describe in detail the effort made to secure their release...The 2 cds come in a small beautiful hardback booklet design including some never seen before photos - at first i found it difficult to remove the cds as the sleeves were too tight...but i managed to carefully insert my finger(after removing cds) and expand them without tearing and now its a breeze...but ... I bought this album when it was first released, and it remains to this day a treasured possession, growing more so every year. 'Acid Country' it was described as when it first appeared and that remains a pretty fair description. Sneeky Pete Kleinow's pedal steel hits you from the start and figures strongly throughout the album. The heartstring-tugging vocals of Gram Parsons reach lump- in- the- throat proportions on Hot Burrito No 1 and with Chris Hillman he presents us with the definitive version of Dark End of the Street. To my mind, there has never been another album like this; the follow-up , Burrito Deluxe is good but just doesn't have the spark and rawness of this little masterpiece.

The "Gilded Palace of Sin" was a landmark country-rock LP that, in 1969, brought out all the best qualities of Gram Parsons as singer, composer and interpreter. His cronies were utmost professionals; their personal involvement and innovative musical contribution to Gram Parsons' vision heightened his achievements. Kudos - in particular - to Chris Hillman for his vocals, songwriting and guitar playing contributions, as well as to Sneeky Pete Kleinow who was always devising new ways to make his steel guitar soar and sing. A ***** album is ever there was one.
After the 11 songs from the first LP, this compilation includes a single A-side titled "The Train Song" which never did anything for me. I wonder who chose to let the Burritos be coproduced by Johnny Guitar Watson? ... Read More:

A Flying Burrito Brothers compilation! Surely not? Oh, yes, really. Another one, this time with 18 tracks, spanning 1968 - 1976, with drool worthy sleevenotes eulogising Gram Parsons, barely mentioning the other members, skipping over the fact that over half the tracks come from the period after he left the band, and despite providing a lengthy list telling you who originally recorded the tracks, fails to let you know which Burrito albums you'll find them on. Useful and useless all in one.
So, a shoddy compilation. Kind of, but there is a saving grace. It's a budget release! Yours for only £4.99 brand new! Which means it's absolutely ideal for the 3 people who don't already own a Burritos album. For the music is divine, and I speak as someone who thinks the Gram ... Read More:

This is one of the greatest cd's available from the Burrito's. Basically this collects demos and unissued recordings from the beginning of the band's most fruitful (and ongoing) era, when the great John Beland joined and took the Burritos to artistic and commercial highs. The songs are many and all are first-rate classics. Especially notable is Beland's beautiful and plaintive 'I Swear I Don't Miss Her Anymore', one of the greatest country-rock tracks ever made, period. "Too Much Honky Tonkin" is an absolutely essential cd, a must-have.
