This contains an amazing collection of songs, very listenable. Lou Gramm's voice is always so distinctive. I liked the addition of three new songs, which fit in well with the older ones.

Ah, Foreigner, so unfairly maligned over here in the UK as a ballads band; they were so much more than that, especially back in ye olde days. The run of albums from their self titled debut in 1977, right through to their magnificent fourth album, 4, contained some of the finest melodic rock songs you are ever likely to hear, as well as some of the strangest. Not that that stopped them selling gazillions of records at the same time.

A new version of Foreigner has been doing the live rounds over the past few years, with founder Mick Jones the only classic member left. The Definitive Collection

It may be hard today, given their footnote status in the history of rock, to realize how huge Foreigner once was. They were, however, one of very few groups having three albums among the top 50 best selling ones during the 70s. The records are:

22. Foreigner - Double Vision (7 Million Sales)
38. Foreigner - Head Games (5 Million Sales)
42. Foreigner - Foreigner (5 Million Sales)

Their forth album, 4, also sold as many records and actually elevated them to international super stardom. After that their album sales began dwindling but they still managed churning out a few hit singles.

Agent Provocateur: Remastered

Agent Provocateur is a very decent follow up to the superb 4.

The record is certainly better more (over?)produced than 4, bringing in a more radio friendly sound that its predecessor.

This works to great effect on the ballads, particularly on the massively popular I Want to Know What Love Is.

But let's not forget that Foreigner were a rock band in their core, and Agent Provocateur rocks, particularly with the riff of the opener track Tooth and Nail and the other rockers Growing Up the Hard Way and Stranger in My Own House.

Down on Love is another fantastic ballad, less commercial than the mega selling I Want to Know..., but more evocative and introspective.

Foreigner 4: Expanded Edition

Slight problem with this record. It contains one of the most famous ballads in the history of rock, the mega selling hit single Waiting for a Girl Like You, which tends to overshadow the rest of the material, which is a shame.

The band did not do themselves any favours by toping Waiting for... with an even bigger selling power ballad in their next record, the equally huge I Want To Know What Love Is.

These two songs branded Foreigner as a ballads band, when in the fact of the matter was that they were rockers, albeit with a softer edge.

4 kicks off with two great anthemic tracks, Night Life, a concert opener if I ever heard one, and the time changing Jukebox Hero.

This is one of my favourite albums (I bought a vinyl copy in 1983 and replaced it with a CD two years later) and a very impressive debut by any standards.

“Foreigner” was released in 1977 (minus of course the bonus tracks that feature on the present version) and justifiably catapulted six musicians, who had previously had little or no success in other bands, into multi-platinum selling superstars.

The album begins in style with “Feels Like The First Time”, the first song Mick Jones—the band’s founder member—wrote for the group he was in the process of forming. The song is strong melodically (a hallmark of Foreigner material) and remains one of their most popular recordings.

I went to see the Legends of Rock show with Alice Cooper and Foreigner in December 2007 when they came to Riga, Latvia. Although it mostly meant seeing AC live, it was actually Foreigner that took the stage by force and never let me go diuring or after the show. They simply blew my mind that night while AC couldn't hold a single note right.

But enough about that. The sound of the CD is great, the band is rocking hard, you can feel the audience going crazy, and the song list contains Foreigner's best material. Most of the songs sound much heavier compared with studio recordings and some of them are real gems. Starrider, Dirty White Boy, and Juke Box Hero (with Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love as a part of it) make you wanna listen to them over ... Read More:
