Fotheringay Vol.2

Spotted in a bookshop in Bakewell, Derbyshire. There wasn't a "2" was there? So I bought it. And it's hardly been off in the car since. I agree with other reviewers that not every song here is a gem, but the Lucas numbers do have something that stirs the sentiments. (You who said he wasn't a great songwriter, I present exhibit A - "Bring 'em Down" on Fairport 9). It's true though that it's the Denny tracks that really stir the soul. Her remarkable ability to interpret a song never disappoints on this disc.

With all the emotion in the vocals, and all the Telecaster Pyrotechnics of the genius Donahue, it's easy to ignore the superb foundation on which this edifice is built. British folk-rock music has provided some of the best rhythm ... Read More:

Whilst I broadly agree with the other reviews, I must say that I don't think this is the highlight of Sandy's post Fairport career. Sandy's compositions and vocal style continued to get more varied and interesting, and also her post Fotheringay albums are sung entirely by her which is all to the good.

This album is held back by Trevor's performances (although i actually don't mind The Ballad of Ned Kelly, which is one of Trevors best songs.) when what one longs for is to finally hear Sandy writing and performing a whole album without compromises.

The Sandy penned songs and the traditional Banks of the Nile are naturally the standout tracks here: for one can't see how anyone in their right mind would thing Trevors Gordon Lightfoot cover ... Read More:

Fotheringay was Sandy's vision of a folk supergroup, and she nearly pulled it off. Her husband-to-be, Trevor Lucas really lets down proceedings with his vocal tracks but apart from that it's a fine album. "The Pond & the Stream", "Nothing More", "The Banks of the Nile" and "Two Weeks Last Summer" are all classics that make this album well worth owning. In a way it's a shame that Sandy opted to go solo as Fotheringay may have faired better than most of their peers over the next 8 years.
