I decided to take a walk in the past and buy this collection - it's superb. It's sing-a-long as every track is well known, well remembered. None of it has dated, none of it. The voices are superb, blending so perfectly on every track. My only complaint, it isn't long enough but then the CD player will keep repeating it until I stop it, so that isn't too much of a problem...
It's sunshine music. It's memories and good listening, it's sing-a-long and listenable, it's every cliché in the book and then some.
Buy it.

Lost Without You: Lost and Found

I had been meaning to get this one for a while, and was finally moved to action by the sad death of lead singer Levi Stubbs on 18 October.

What a terrific set. Once again I cannot understand how they left music like this in the can for so long. Levi was a natural baritone, and a very good one at that. The producers at Motown got him singing tenor, above his normal range to give an edge to his voice and an emotional urgency that worked on hit after hit.

His voice, those harmonies from the guys, and that magical music from The Funk Brothers is a hypnotic blend for me. The stand-out track for me after a couple of plays is 'My Fatherlesss Son'. Sure it is contrived and melodramatic and uses every trick in the book to tug on your heart ... Read More:

Yesterday's Dreams & Soul Spin

Back in the early 70's, when I was just a young impressionable girl, I bought a vinyl copy of 'Soul Spin' and I hardly removed from the turntable for years! I already liked the Four Tops and my favourite song of theirs 'I'm in a different world' appears on the other album included in this package - 'Yesterday's Dreams'.
I hadn't heard 'Soul Spin' for a long time and was delighted to find I still knew all the words to my favourite tracks 'Look out your window', 'Lost in a pool of red' and the fantastic 'Stop the world'. This album really showcases the amazing strong and soulful voice of lead singer, Levi Stubbs, who for me is still Top of the Tops!!!

First off, Four Tops are one of the best groups and all music fans should go out and get their Holland-Dozier-Holland era songs. But anything after that period (1968) is rarely up to this quality. If you want the best of the Four Tops- get the Motown 2-for-1's; For Tops/Second Album, and On Top/Reach Out. They are £4.99 each on Amazon- original recordings of a group in their prime, with one of the most prolific songwriting teams of all time, and with the legendary funk brothers in support. That's £10 for 47 tracks.
