As with Fourplay's earlier work, this recording has a good range of instrumental song styles that showcase the writing talents of each of the Fourplayers: Bob James, Larry Carlton, Nathan East and Harvey Mason. The exception to this is Sting's Fields of Gold which opens the album, James and Carlton sharing the melody on piano and guitar respectively, with breathy voices filling out the background. In addition to his impressive 'scat' vocals/playing (on Rozil), East does a passable job of singing on the titletrack Journey, a number he also wrote that is reminiscent of Eric Clapton. James, meanwhile, who penned three of the songs, shows his usual flair for varied arrangements and likeable melodies. Drummer Mason contributes ... Read More:

Unarguably these are classy musicians. Open the sleeve notes for this album the credits are:
Bob James - Piano
Nathan East - Bass and Vocals
Larry Carlton - Guitar
Harvey Mason - Drums
I considered giving this 3 stars. Yes there is some lovely guitar playing from Larry Carlton and occasionally Bob James plays some real Piano but this is mostly like Jazz FM when it stopped playing Jazz and became Smooth FM. If you liked that you'll love this.
I found it to be over-produced and soulless - you have been warned.

This is the first album I'd bought by Fourplay and I can say I wasn't dissapointed at all. Great tracks played by spot on musicians. A brilliant album to just relax to and sooth the cares of the day away. Highly recommended.

Owning as I do all the Fourplay albums up to and including Heartfelt, this one remains for me their best and my most often revisited (though Yes please! runs it close). The sound quality's great, the songs are a good mixture of upbeat and reflective whilst the playing, of course, is impeccable without being stiff or stilted. Personally, I don't think the two vocal tracks fit at all and I always programme them out, though others may disagree. Oh yes, one other thing ~ this music is worth far, far more than just playing as background muzak, so anyone who describes it as suitable only for elevators or department stores should be swiftly shot and buried in an unmarked grave.

Easy listening, smooth jazz, call it what you will, it's not for everyone. I happen to like it. And not just in the background. This recording is strengthened by a sweet rendition of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing and some impressive vocals/playing (esp. on Piece of My Heart) by bassist Nathan East who also wrote the ballad Someone to Love. Also, there's Larry Carlton, replacing Lee Ritenour from the first three albums, who brings a raw, bluesy edge to the guitars in contrast to Ritenour's more restrained approach. Drummer/composer Harvey Mason keeps everything together with verve and attentiveness, while keyboardist Bob James does what he does best: Synth textures, piano frills and slick arranging that won't damage the speakers.
