No Pussyfooting

This is one of the most awful albums I ever heard.

It all seems a joke. Probably is a masterpiece for toilette ambience or a sound experience in North Polo.

I like most of Robert Fripp guitar playing and Brian Eno works but this is too much for me... I just don't see nothing more then boring continuing horrible sustaining sounds.

Beyond Even

While 2004's The Equatorial Stars, by the most cerebral duo in rock was a long-awaited epistle after a lengthy hiatus for most fans, few of us knew that Fripp and Eno had been working on and off for more than a decade beforehand. Thus Beyond Even ( Cheekily sub-titled Works Of Startling Genius and available as a double CD with a mix side and errr a normal side ) comes as a very welcome surprise.
Stylistically Beyond Even is difficult to classify. There are the to be expected ambient pieces - probably those that came from the same sessions as the Equatorial Stars material . Exposure: Special Edition

As released back in 1979 this album made nonsense of the idea that prog and new wave were incompatible. Not everyone was listening, unfortunately, but for those of us who got the point, it was immediately mind-opening. So it's a real treat to finally get to hear the whole thing.

This album is startling, beautiful, seductive, abrasive, funny, deadly serious and more. Short fragments of songs burst into taped conversations (and vice versa), heavy guitar riffage-mania is juxtaposed with drones, gorgeous frippertronics and vocals which are at times crooned while at others sound spat or throttled.

The Equatorial Stars

This, I assume, is a sister album to Eno and Fripp's 'Evening Star',and a continuation of their collaboration begun on 1975's 'No Pussyfooting'.
In my opinion,we have two of music's most gifted and original people here,and an album with the two of them is always going to be interesting.This doesn't disappoint,lovely ambient textures with Fripp's amazing sounding guitar seemingly endlessly sustained over the top,modulating weirdly from time to time,but always hypnotic.
Percussion and rhythm do creep into the music a little later in the album,but generally it is a mellow affair,perfect for chilling out with a loved one or what you will.

This is a lovely, understated album. It is in the tradition of the Fripp / Eno Ambient music that we have been either loving or loathing for the past thirty odd years. There is a consistent sound throughout the album with Robert Fripp on guitar and Theo Travis on alto flute and soprano sax.

These are two towering talents enjoying playing with a mutual respect. I first really became aware of Theo Travis on the Soft Machine Legacy album Steam where he filled the shoes of the sadly departed Elton Dean in grand style. His solo album, to which Robert Fripp contributed production and some guitar, is excellent.

At the End of Time

I first heard one of the title tracks on Late Junction about 2 months ago (surely the best music programme on radio!)and immediately put it on my Christmas wishlist. Christmas Day - I was not disappointed!! It works as pure ambient whilst at the same time merits closing off the rest of the world and just sitting and listening. The music raises a couple of questions for me. Firstly, is this entirely the product of synthesised and looped guitar with no added keyboards?? If so - how does Mr Fripp's Solar Voyager work? Secondly - how do I get to hear of RF's live performances BEFORE they happen. Oh to see him live!! (Surely one of my 50 things to do before...the end of time.)

Damage

No, not B-Thong or Roger Eno, but the early 90s Fripp-Sylvian collaborations re-issued and re-engineered for another generation. And not before time.

'Damage' (rightfully the title track) is, without doubt, my favourite song of all time: a lingering, aching, remorseful piece of percussive-less balladry. Fripp's red-grey sky of an electronica backdrop hangs evocatively in the air, punctuated by Sylvian's tremulous vocals and some judiciously restrained bass courtesy of Trey Gunn. The sense of loss is overwhelming, but somehow there is hope in the void. The respectful pause-before-applause at the end says it all... less is truly more. All this and the only slightly less wondrous 'First Day' too.

The Cheerful Insanity of Giles Giles and Fripp

This is a slice of 1968 at its whimsical best. This flower power stuff was all the rage for a very short period of time. The whole thing came crashing to the ground rather suddenly the following year, which heralded the appearance of power trios and the start of progressive rock, both of which were seen as a reaction to this sort of thing. Strange then this band should develop into King Crimson who instantly set the British rock scene alight with their debut album.

Having said all that this album still bears closer inspection. There is some terrific guitar work from Robert Fripp and the songs are mostly good, the whimsical spoken bit I find rather endearing, people who find them embarrassing need to grow up and stop worrying about sounding cool.
