I already owned the previous edition of this on CD, as will some of you, so I'll break this review in two. First the basic album, second the add-ons.
Maggot Brain is one of Funkadelic's three best albums of the pre-Warner era (along with Funkadelic and Standing on the Verge). It's a move away from the bluesy, very Hendrix like funk-tinged rock of their first album into harder territory. When I first got it (on tape of all things) back in '91 I thought it was too rocky for me and some convinced soul boys may still take that view. I've come to see it for what it is, one of the best pieces of music ever made in any genre. It'll appeal to rock and funk fans alike: it's what guitar music should sound like, hard-edged AND soulful. One Nation Under A Groove

It,s not likely that a band,s tenth studio album will be their best but there can be little argument that the 1978 album One Nation Under A Groove by Funkadelic saw the band reach the pinnacle of their career. A loose concept album about the power of funk to make people happier and more open minded with the added benefit of making then dance like loons on hot coals One Nation Under a Groove is the bands most lauded( rightly) and commercially successful album ( rightly too)

Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow: Remastered

Having recently purchased all four Funkadelic albums featuring guitarist Eddie Hazel, (their self-titled debut, Maggot Brain, and Standing On The Verge....) I can hugely recommend this album to anyone with a craving for some early 70's acid-infused funky heavy rock!

Tracks 1 through 4 are all funk rock gems...Hazel's guitar sound throughout strongly recalls Hendrix, off tracks like 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)' and the way he controls feedback can only be compared to Jimi himself. Meanwhile, it's all kept very funky with great basslines and wigged out vocals. The final track, 'Eulogy And Light' is a hilarious re-working of the Lords Prayer with truly tripped out mellow backing music, (actually a different song of theirs fed backwards ... Read More:

Funkadelic: Remastered

Funkadelic's first offering from 1970 is a sprawling set of psychedelic guitars, echoing drums, spaced bass and vocal harmonies. The Invictus sessions that Parliament cut just a year before the release of this album bare some of these traits, but here they've been nurtured to perfection.

In terms of sound, this album bares a close resemblance to "Free Your Mind..." but is much more soulful. From FYM onwards the band was much rockier, "Maggot Brain" being the best example. Here however, their influences are clearly based in soul like The Temptations and the funk/soul/rock of Sly & the Family. Standing on the Verge of Getting It on: Remastered

"Standing on the Verge of Getting it on", is a very apt title. In 1974, when this album was released, the group were trimming down their style from the earlier sprawling rock/psychedelic sound. It's no surprise that this year also saw the re-emergence of Parliament who had a much tighter sound. Ironically the album also sees the welcome return of Eddie Hazel the man who came up with Maggot Brain. The albums sound then, while funky as hell, lies somewhere between the drawn out haze of the past and the more polished future.

"Red Hot Mama" is a reworking of a Parliament number to be found on the Invictus sessions, a funky romp to kick of the album. The thing about any Funkadelic album though, is that you really have to like the whole concept. ... Read More:

Maggot Brain [VINYL]

There's a track missing from this release (compared with the tape copy which came from my roommate's vinyl (cheers Giles)), a short (few minutes) intro, which is essential to this analysis.

The intro is excited, a little confused, filled with anticipation, then Maggot Brain is the aching beauty of the come up, Can You Get To That is the plateau when you think you've got a handle on it, but really you've just stopped coming up, and are really high (beautiful, according to JH). Then there's a couple of tracks of general confusion and jazzy funky noise, then there's the sanity restoring We Are Back In Our Minds Again. Dunno what Wars Of Armageddon is about, was always too stoned by then ;-)

I wanted to get One Nation Under a Groove, but when I noticed that this box set was made up of four Funkadelic albums from the late 70s/early 80s, I got that instead.

Disc 1 contains One Nation and is absolutely essential. Perhaps the finest party album, and very different from earlier records such as Maggot Brain. Kicking off with the ubiquitous title track, which I'm sure gets sampled in modern hip-hop/r&b more than is healthy, the album rides a funky rollercoaster through to the epic guitar workout that Maggot Brain (Live) is always going to be. Highlights include Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad and an instrumental version of the same track, as well as mellower moments like Grooveallegiance.
