Of all the members that belonged to the Byrds at various stages, Gene was without doubt the most talented when it came to songwriting. He was essentially the creative force in the early Byrds, even though Roger McGuinn got the limelight for being the "Leader" of the group.
I cannot understand how this album did not make it big time when it was originaly released. It is equal to anything put out by Dylan, Neil Young, Lennon or Lou Reed. The truth is that many of us realised what a great artist Gene was, only after his untimely demise. Of course some of us were not even born when this came out!
It is a joy to listen to this masterpiece lying down in bed with the headphones on, so that the rest of world is put to one side ... Read More:

I was facing a long car journey with a friend a few weeks back. Luckily he had 2 recent purchases with him - No Other and Pacific Ocean Blue (Dennis Wilson). I have to say that the miles flew by listening to both those wonderful albums. There is a reason why No Other has consistent 5-star reviews here and Pacific Ocean Blue is not far off. The mention above of Gram Parsons'"Cosmic American Music" sums it up. This album really does capture the essence of what can make American (West Coast) music great.

Okay, it's not audiophile recording quality and yes from time to time he drives his voice to where it really should not be - but NONE of that matters! It's a sad but beautiful experience. A life unfulfilled - and played out in front of a tiny audience. Buy it while you still can. I suspect this is a limited release.

I have only recently started listening to The Byrds (over the last year), mainly through the classic remastered reissued albums, and they have become one of my favourite bands. However, I had no previous knowledge of any band members' solo efforts. I was in Borders recently and found this double CD on sale for £4.00. What a bargain, this collection is superb. Everyone should own one!
I prefer the second CD, but only just. Words cannot really describe how good this is. The arrangements, the singing, just sublime. Gene Clark - pure genius. Recommended

In Concert
Chances to hear Gene Clark live in the 70s and 80s were pretty limited, if you lived in the UK. All those that I made it to, he either didn't turn up or was badly drunk. Before I had heard a decent live performance he was dead, one of lifes profound dissapointments.
If, like me , you think Gene Clark would be good in a small venue you are not wrong. This CD is some compensation for all those gigs that never were and I commend it to you.

Whatever the reasons for his departure from the group he helped to found, for music fans in 1966 the prospect of separate future recordings by both The Byrds AND Gene Clark must have been mouth-watering indeed. However, Clark's solo career was disappointingly faltering, despite the high quality of his output, quality which oozes from this debut: a collection of wonderful Clark-penned compositions brought to life by a who's who of folk rock musicians and the soaring harmonies of the Gosdin Brothers.
"Echoes" is a stunning opener, a dreamy masterpiece backed by a beautiful baroque accompaniment belying Clark's musical background. It does, however, offer a red herring for the music that follows. But what music it is: from the classic 60s folk rock of ... Read More:

Wonderful music from a wonderful artist. This release really does justice to the memory and legacy of Gene Clark. Basic vocal and acoustic guitar arrangements make for a beautifully simple yet rich and rewarding set. That voice! Haunting, aching - full of longing and vulnerability. "Dark of The Moon", "Kathleen" and "Gypsy Rider" are my personal favorites but if you are familar with Gene's other 7O's work (this is probably closer to "White Light" and "Two Sides To Every Story"), every track will hold some fascination and grip you. Given the length of some of the tracks (6 - 8 minutes)I guess they were intended for much more elaborate arrangements, but there is a purity and intimacy about these demos that make them very special. This isn't background music, this is music ... Read More:

Here is something special: Gene Clark, ex-Byrds songwriter equipt with one of the most expressive voices in rock history - soulful with no hysteria - teams up with up and coming Texan singer/songwriter to record a fine album of country-rock. Carla Olson's powerful alto is able to harmonise with Clark's tenor as if she was born a sister to him - listen particularly to Olson's Are We Still Making Love and to their delicious cover of Phil Ochs's Changes. Highly recommended, and makes me wish even more that Clark was still here with us. Thank you Gene.
