Perfect Hits 1975-1981

I have never been overly enthusiastic about Generation X compared to some of the other bands from the 70-80s era. For example no one can compare to the Sex Pistols for the 70s and in my personal opinion the Dead Kennedys were the highlight of the 80s.

However, this album is well worth getting. Billy Idol has an amazing voice and the vocals are great. Classics such as King Rocker do get stuck in your head with very good riffs and tunes.

Perfect Hits is a good album because it has all of Generation X's finest singles with a wide variety of different sounds, but all definitely catchy and listenable. generation x's self-titled debut is by far their best and most punky album. forget buying boxsets, compilations, and 'best-of's, this is the only gen x album you'll ever need. for fans of the band's later, poppier, 80s work and billy idol's solo career, this album probably isn't for you. even tho' this is lightweight stuff compared to the pistols, et al, it's still punk.
although their songs were very rarely about much at all and billy idol's gorgeous (sorry!) sneer was a straight ripoff of elvis, these guys more than made up for it with the contents of their debut.
the cd holds 11 original album tracks and 5 great bonus tracks.

Anthology

Both the other reviews are, in part correct. Disc One is a re-issued Greatest Hits with some extra tracks (in admittedly, better sound quality than previous releases). Disc Two is the unreleased 'Sweet Revenge' LP which is most of the last Gen X LP 'Kiss Me Deadly' but roughly mixed and all different versions, together with more unreleased tracks. This disc is rounded off with a cover of the old 1966 Bowie track (wrongly credited to Idol/James!), 'I Dig Everything', a great mix of 'Dancing With Myself' and a new (ish) interview with Tony James (revealing fascinating insights to the bands history).
Finally, Disc 3 is the live album, in excellent sound quality and a long and varied show.

Valley of the Dolls

Just received this great cd from Amazon and am thrilled with it!
I've been aticipating a cd release for this LP for ages and am so glad it's arrived.
The best thing for me about this album is that it reinstates Billy Idol as a great rock performer and writer and has rescued him from the "gary glitters retarded nephew" image that he has made for himself in the states where his musical output has,in my opinion been crap.
However this album is not just William as it features some great guitar playing from Derwood and a good solid rhythm section with Tony james (whose song writing seriously outweighs his bass playing!)and Mark Laff kicking up a storm.One of the strongpoints of this collection for me seems that it almost captures a snapshot of an era ... Kiss Me Deadly

This was always my favourite Gen X album due to Tony James' fantastic bass-lines and here it is re-released on CD. This time it comes with some bonus and live tracks too. In addition, there is now a short essay included and some nice period colour photos of the band. To my ear it also seems to have been remastered; it's certainly louder and clearer than the original CD issue (no credits to prove this though). Also, the annoying 'Featuring Billy Idol' epithet has now been removed - a pity this wasn't done with the previous 2 re-releases.
I do however, have to agree with Tony B, the previous reviewer, in that 'Ugly Rash' should have been included, but thank EMI that they didn't release this on a digipak. Many of us collectors HATE digipaks! I don't so much mind ... Read More:
