I heard Bad to the Bone on the radio whilst driving in USA and just had to buy some George Thorogood. Hearing the song again for the first time years reminded me of George's fantastic set during Live Aid in 1986. When I put it on in the car I just wondered how I had got by all these years without owning this masterpiece. It's a great mix of rock a blues, like ZZTop with attitude! Buy it, enjoy it and play it loud!

There are those acts that do their best work in the studio but are pretty dull live and there are those who are in their element in intimate live venues. GT is a perfect example of the latter. IMO his studio albums are pretty so-so as the tunes are all quite similar as the instrumentation is fairly basic and the production quite flat. The live recordings, of which this is marginally the best, are another kettle of fish. With 'Live' you get to feel the vibe of the gig. The energy just pours out from start to finish and the versions of the one dimensional studio recordings are made meatier, gutsier and much more fun. I've heard scores of live albums and this one is considerably better than many highly rated (and often doctored)live recordings. ... Read More:

This is George Thorogoods debut album from 1977 and as a demonstration of the joys of the blues combined with driving rock its rarely been bettered.
The band is mainly just drums (Jeff Simon), bass (Billy Blough) and George on guitar, mainly played in the classic Elmore James bottleneck style.
The songs all drive along with the exception of the lovely accoustic blues of "Kind Hearted Women". The Amazon reviewer is a little unkind in saying George isn't a great guitarist or vocalist. Listen to this track and everything George does contradicts this opinion. Theres great feeling in his playing and his impassioned vocals, including impressive falsetto may not technically be the best, but pure technical ability has never been an ... Read More:

my only regret is that my review of the 30 years album gave five stars and now I have this album it needs to have 5.5 stars in comparison. I love the songs and they rock as well as any of the early songs. I would love to see George on stage but i guess he will not be visiting the UK anytime soon.

Maybe it's just because I'm used to the originals, but George Thorogood's abilities as a bluesman (or a slide guitar player) don't impress me.
To me, Elmore James did a considerably more convincing Elmore James, but there is no doubting that Thorogood rocks, in a meat-and-potatoes kind of way, and some of the originals on this extensive compilation album, such as "If You Don't Start Drinkin'", "Move It On Over" and "I Drink Alone" are fun, catchy rockers.
The album may be too long for the casual fan (and the tempo and the approach barely changes through all thirty songs), but there is no denying that "Anthology" is a very comprehensive overview of the Delaware-born guitarist's career.
