Georgie Fame could do little wrong from the moment he burst into the public consciousness with the no.1 hit, 'Yeh Yeh'. Not surprisingly, this collection of mid-1960s recordings opens with this and his follow-up chart-topper, 'Get Away'. These are among the poppier tracks, along with Bobby Hebb's 'Sunny' and 'Sitting In The Park', a languid, summery hit. All of the music contained here though is jazz-inflected r&b, led by Fame's organ, husky vocals and complemented by brass. Most of the tracks are uptempo and reflect a buoyant and exciting musical era. The album is a capsule of swinging Britain as we like to imagine it, even if the image isn't the truth. Perhaps the only mistake is the cover of 'Green Onions'. It's actually a good track in ... Read More:

. . . at least one Georgie Fame album, that is. Georgie is responsible for giving the world what is arguably the finest horn riff of all on Get Away - just five notes, but, oh, what notes. This excellent value CD is a must - it's got most of his hits, and the other tracks are all standards which Fame interprets in his own accomplished way with character and empathy. And it's also a great demonstration of why the pop music of the sixties was so brilliant - an era when artists of Georgie's calibre were taking their inspiration from jazz and blues and, in turn, inspiring so many others. I love it. The price of this Fame album is ludicrously cheap and there's really very little excuse for not including it in your collection.

What a great album. This has over twenty great songs on it and is just perfect. It has some of my favourite tunes of his on, including my all time favourite, 'Peaceful'. It's laid back, it's funky, it's happening and it's all accompanied by his wonderful voice, soulful, dark and versatile. I love it.

Georgie Fame's musical roots were in jazz and blues and that was what really interested him. Fortunately for him, there was room in the sixties pop charts for such musicians, especially if they were prepared to adapt their music to appeal to pop audiences. So it was that Georgie Fame topped the UK charts three times and several other hits. By some statistical freak, none of his hits made the top ten except for the three that made number one.
The three UK number ones were Yeh yeh (his first hit, though not his first single), Get away (which he originally wrote for a TV commercial) and The ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, which was about the film. These are the songs that Georgie is best remembered for but some of his other pop hits are also ... Read More:

As previous reviewers have said this is fantastic. Georgie is in fantastic voice and the Big Band frequently swing like hell such as on the amazing "Jimmy McGroove" on disc 2.
The big band is a who's who of British Jazz:
Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Nigel Hitchcock, Peter King, Alan Skidmore, Art Themen, Geoff Gascoyne, Jim Mullen etc.
Theres 23 tracks in total over 2 discs, covering everything from 60's hits (including a stomping version of Yeh Yeh) to lovely Jazz Ballads like "My Lady".
Release Date August 12, 1996
EACH TRACK DISPLAYS HIS MUSICAL TALENT. HIS INTERPRETATION OF CLASSIC SONGS ARE SECOND TO NONE. A MIX OF JAZZ , BLUES AND BIG BAND POP.
JUST LISTEN TO HIM SINGING "PEACEFULL & HIDE AWAY" TWO REALLY GREAT TRACKS. ALL 20 SONGS ON THIS C.D ARE A MUST FOR ANY ONE WHO LIKES GEORGIE FAME AND GOOD MUSIC. FOR SOME REASON "YA`YA" & "GETAWAY" IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE C.D, BUT EVEN SO THIS IS A COOL C.D TO HAVE.

To the reviewer who referred to the Flamingo live album, it was re-released in Japan with bonus tracks, but is no longer available. I agree, it should be re-released - NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Georgie Fame: the man the man calls the man. To get that sort of respect from Van Morrison, you have to be doing something right and this album demonstrates why. The better half of a 2 CD set which Georgie recorded at Ronnie scotts in 1997 (the other half being 'Walking Wounded), this demonstrates why Georgie has endured so long and is respected by so many.
Pumping, raw, edgy and tight, GF has assembled a brilliant band: GF on hammond/piano on vocals, Guy Barker on trumpet, Alan Skidmore on tenor sax, Geoff Gascoyne on bass, Anthony Kerr on vibes. Not bad ! and to bring up the year, his sons Tristan and James Powell on guitar and drums. PURELY ON MERIT ! 'Brother Tristan' and 'Brother James' would be an asset to any band.

I'm old enough to have seen Georgie at the legendary Klook's Kleek over 40 years ago. Entertaining, but limited as art.
There is an odd idea that musicians are stuck with their level of ability for life. In fact, those who work at it improve and Mr Fame is an artist and a one-off artist with a voice of his own.
After a gap of decades, I saw him play free in a park not long ago. He's not flashy but does he grow on you. And this album grows on you with its mixture of tempos and moods. And its wonderful musicians like Peter King.
I'd pick as the best track Eros Hotel, a thoughtful and unusual poem about casual sex. But the whole album is things you will go on wanting to play for years, forgotten for a while but then revisited.
