Many would have it that Gerry Rafferty's classic subsequent album 'Night Owl' is his best - but probably only his most memorable by the title being the same as the hit single that was taken from it, but I've always believed 'City To City' to be his best work, and it just so happens to include his biggest selling single 'Baker Street'.

Every track on this album is a masterpiece - catchy and memorable after only the first hearing, and I challenge anybody to say otherwise.

Music at its best - a 70s classic!

Right Down the Line: the Best of Gerry Rafferty

Baker Street must be one of the few mega hits that has not become cheesy and painful to hear. It is also a good indication of the style of Rafferty's other songs.

If you've only got an old LP from thirty years ago then you have probably never heard these songs properly at all. Get the CD, bung it on your player - anything these days will reproduce the sound better than you remember it - and enjoy some classy pop.

On A Wing & A Prayer

I've enjoyed Gerry Raffert's music for more years than I care to admit, but sadly, as a collection of songs, this album is the most unlistenable work that Rafferty has has ever released. Individually there are a few gems on here, but generally speaking this recording is for die-hard fans only. Newcomers to Rafferty's usually exceptional body of work would be better off trying Sleepwalking, Snakes and Ladders, City to City or Night Owl, all of which are far more accessible and melodic than On A Wing and a Prayer ever manages to be. Fortunately, Mr. Rafferty returned to form on his work following this generally disappointing anomaly.

I read the reviews of this album from other Amazon critics with interest. Many who don't like this album are probably looking for a cloned CD of earlier classics such as "City to City" or "Night Owl". From a personal point of view that would have disappointed me totally had he done so. The joy of following someone like Rafferty is the way he keeps developing and writing for a more mature audience.

He always had the smoothest of voices and the uncanny knack of introducing great melody into his songs. However, it is inevitable that subject matter, tinged with a decent level of Sinicism, are going to reflect where he is today and not where he was in the seventies.

I'd been aware of the Humblebums for years but never heard any of their work before buying this album. I had heard both Connolly and Rafferty (who comes from my home town) individually and wondered what the combined effort would be like. In truth it's a bit of a mixed bag. Rafferty's superior songwriting talent is evident in songs such as I Can't Stop Now and Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway. Connelly holds his own with quality contributions such as the Give Me a Little of Your Time and the sing-along Saturday Round About Sunday. Connelly's comic songwriting comes across in Why Don't They Come Back to Dunoon and Little Blue Lady (which features the best comb and paper musicianship I've ever heard!) One More Dream

I first heard "Baker Street" in 1978 when I was a teenager working in London for the summer, I loved the haunting sound of the song from the first time I heard it, and have loved listening to Gerry and also Stealers Wheels ever since...absolutely FAB music and never tire of it!
