Soul-jazz legend Gil Scott-Heron delivers a fine album here with some of the best tracks of his career.
"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is mesmeric, sharp, intelligent and innovative. "I Think I'll Call It Morning" is charming, sweet and soulful. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is socially aware and tight and the title track is moving and thoughtful.
"Lady Day And John Coltrane" is a sublime peice of tight funky jazz (as opposed to jazz funk know what i mean?).
A very good album. Worth exploring the man's back catalogue.
Intelligent, excellent, soulful music.
Release Date April 15, 1989
Gil Scott-Heron is one of the great recording artists of the 20th century. It is a shame that most people know almost nothing about him.
He work is almost always interesting and I would recommend (almost) all of his albums. If you are unfamiliar with his work then this compilation album is a very good place to start.
Gil Scott-Heron draws on a wide range of influences: the music of John Coltrane, the blues, the oral traditions of the American South and many others to create fantastic music in a variety of different styles from spoken word/rap to (almost) soul. He is perhaps best known for his searing political (and personal) lyrics that are often so good that they can be read as poetry. However, he is also an excellent musician ... Read More:

behind the shades burn the vigilent eyes of a revolutionary.where bob marley and even the brilliant stevie wonder fail to truly evoke their disdain for societies moral regression gsh shoots straight from the hip.this is a timeless album equally neccesary and insightful today as george w bush creates anew america in his own hixville likeness as it was in 1981."grandmas hands" is however desecration on alarge scale especially if you happen to be a bill withers fan."is that jazz blows a mingus style vibe and gets a groove going and eases the feel of the album."inner city blues keeps the soul feel running;not as good as washington jrs. version but without doubt solid and interesting.its at this point gill digs deep and drags this album to dizzying ... This is indeed a great album - it's one of my favourite Gil Scott-heron CD's - but you need to know that he's always had a policy of recycling song titles and album titles, and even book titles into songs, albums, etc. Thus the SONG 'Winter In America' came later, and is featured on an album called 'The First Minute Of A New Day'. If that's what you're looking for, don't buy this. But it IS a great album. 'Peace Go With You, Brother' is especially good. 'The Bottle' is a classic, and 'H2Ogate' Blues is still worth listening to.

This albums really amazing- I'm not sure how anybody could deem it 'average'.
Fans of world music should really enjoy this offering from Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson- it, along with the equally as good 'Its Your World' album has the most exotic feel of their albums.
The songs range from powerful to wise to unique. This albums from a time when there was a message in the music. 'Ain't no such thing as Superman' is a personal favourite, as is 'Western Sunrise' which sounds like no other song you've probably heard. 'Alluswe' ends the album on a really beautiful bitter-sweet note.
You might not like this cd if you think that the best music in the world is by grim faced student types, but for everyone else its well worth your time. Gil Scott-Heron ... Read More:

Gil Scott-Heron is one of the great recording artists of the 20th century; it is a shame that he is relatively unknown. He work is always interesting and I would recommend (almost) all of his albums.
Moving Target is musically, one of Gil Scott Heron's more upbeat, funkier albums although the lyrical content is rather personal and pessimistic. The album opens fantastically with four excellent tracks: Fast Lane, Washington DC, No Exit and Blue Collar but peters out towards the end as both the reggae tinged Ready or Not and Black History/The World have dated quite badly.
Although Moving Target holds a special place in my affections (it was the first GSH album I bought many, many years ago) I do not think that it is by any stretch of the imagination his best ... Read More:

I can definitely recommend this as anthology as the best way to get to know this extremely talented artist. If you love great music and like lyrics that make you think then this is the album for you. I listen and reflect with sadness at times that Gil seems to be struggling so much to defeat his own drug demons, but that does not reduce the impact of the inclusions.
The album covers the period 1973 to 1980, but to my ears the quality of the music is timeless. It is jazz, it is soul, it is funk, but above all is beautiful music. The live version of "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is quite simply 12 minutes of superb music, but perhaps the real gems are the harder to later tracks like Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams) and Madison Avenue.
Much respect to the folks at Soul Brother for ... Read More:
