Oh Gilbert! I really want to buy this CD. I love your music, and this seems like a great collection. BUT ... I won't buy it while it has such a tacky title and awful artwork. CDs are meant to bring pleasure to the listener and look great on the rack, but I'd have to hide this one in a dark cellar, as I'd be embarassed to have it on display. Please re-package it, and I promise you I'll be the first to buy a copy.

I agree wholeheartedly with the review by J.J.Rhodes, but feel I should make the point that the whole set is recorded in full glorious MONO! Once you have got over the shock of the sound stage collapsing into a point source however, the music really is delightful, and takes me back to the days when I used to pay 9d to sit up in the gods at the Golders Green Hippodrome to hear the D'Oyly Carte company sing their way through all those charming numbers. This set has a distinctly dated feel about it, and makes one realise just how much performing styles, as well as recording techniques, have changed in half a century (and some of the artists were clearly chosen for their ability to act rather than their ability to sing!). But for all that, I'm glad I bought ... Read More:

The Duke of Plaza-Toro's instruction to the heirs to the throne of Barataria to preserve a demeanor "still sufficiently dignified" answers a criticism levelled at this series of Savoy Operas recorded under the direction of Sir Malcolm Sargent. Lacking dialogue, and using major British singers who never actually performed on stage in Gilbert and Sullivan, the presentation, especially of the first two of the series to appear, was considered too sedate. A great improvement was made when veteran singer George Baker was invited to participate in the remainder of the series. Although never a member of the D'Oyle Carte Opera company that regularly staged these works until 1961, he had featured in an earlier recorded series, also conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent, ... As a life-long fan of Gilbert and Sullivan music, I can't speak highly enough of this album. Top quality in all respects, and thoroughly enjoyable. Wonderful value for money.

Just got 'A Scruff at Heart' yesterday and have played it through three times. I am amazed at this mans craft at songwriting. His lyrics are so thought provoking in an extremely entertaining way married with actual original melodies, something very rare these days. This album has gilbert stripped mainly to piano and voice but it works brilliantly. The songs shine through uncluttered. A truly great work.

Been a fan of Ray's since 1970 when first hearing the song, "Nothing Rhymed". Vividly remember buying this album on vinyl back in 1971. Why? Cos he was different to everyone else around at the time (exactly what Gilbert wanted). He's still writing songs to this day but i still reckon his early stuff was Gilbert at his very best. "Permissive Twit" is the song that stands out for me, sad song with excellent lyrics. Everyone's favourite, "Matrimony" is also here in its glory as is his chart debut hit, "Nothing Rhymed". 15 UK Top 40 singles (and 2 of those reaching No. 1) isn't half bad a pop career in my humble opinion. If you like nostalgia and more importantly you quite liked Gilbert O'Sullivan then this album will not disappoint believe me!
