Let's face it. As a DJ and musical tastemaker Gilles Peterson has few peers but in my humble opinion he's put his name and face on to a few ropey compilations over the last couple of years. Brownswood Bubblers Three heralds a startling return to form.
An eclectic tour de force of fine talents, there really is something on here for just about everyones's musical palette from the catchy electro swirl of "Turn it on," to the punchy soul of "How about us" and the ethereal, dream of Kenneth Bager's "Fragment Zero."
Two tracks that really do it for me are the smokey Mrs. Dalloway reflection of Jukes's "Something important," and the stark lyrics on,"Prayers for Angry Young Men."

Boundry busting Gilles girates his Technic for smiley faces...

CD1 foreward thinking house mix, starting out all soulful and vocal, then moving into his more trademark afro sound (with 4/4 this time though), then into jazzy house and deep techno. He gives the middle finger to his dissers that say he can't mix. Ok he's no Louie Vega or Sasha but he does a solid mix here.

CD2 his usual kinda black music gear. Very uplifting though 'think Jackie Brown' soul, jazz, b-boy.

CD3 unmixed exclusive gems, a good variety of house grooves for all you budding jocks out there. Very different and very fresh.

Highly recommended.

Gilles Peterson Digs America: Brownswood USA

GP picks some winners here. Darondo's "Didn't I" is worth the price of admission alone. The previously undiscovered version Baaska & Scavelli's elusive "Get Off The Ground" (AKA The Bottom End), a mythical track on the jazz dance scene really is the icing on the cake.

Back in Brazil

Following on, and using the same winning formula as the collection In Africa, and In Brazil, we now have Back In Brazil. Gilles' decision to have a full CD of archive stuff alongside a CD of new stuff is better than it sounds...there are some great Brazilian tunes in the vaults, and I have found myself listening to classics from the sixties and seventies quite a bit, although admittedly I prefer the new stuff.

Disc one, Das Velhas, (the oldies?) highlights are wide and varied from Salsa orchestras to intimate Bossa Nova tunes, but my faves are Jorge Ben (natch), Luis Eca's intriguing loping sound, and Antonio Adolfo's sweeping big band arrangement. 31/2 stars.

The BBC Sessions: Compiled By Gilles Peterson

This CD came highly recommended by friends and here on amazon. I've given this a month of playing but have decided I can no longer put up with it.The hitherto unreleased tracks from Beck and Bjork would have been better remaining just that, they are both utterly depressing. Roots Manuva track is just appalling, the only glimmer of hope on the whole double Cd in my view is the Fat Freddys Drop track.The rest of the content is filler to my ears.
I have about a thousand CDs and vinyl in my collection and this for my money rates in the bottom 10 % and will never buy anything with the GP name attached.My collection goes back many years and during the oil crisis a few years back an album like this would have been seen as a waste of the worlds finite resources. ... I bought this as it was highly reduced in price and what a bargain. It's a feast of grooves, good feeling vibes and earthly rhythms that will totally transform any views you may have that African music is for the musical elite only, it's amazing and I'd have no hesitation in saying BUY THIS NOW!

this is the pinnacle of the worlwide sessions, truly a fantastic collection of songs a deffinate must have for any fans of gilles and the genre , there is only one very sad ommission on the cd version, drum magicks"easy boom" which is the best song on the vinyl edition and a guaranteed floor filler. why oh why didnt they put it on the cd ! anyway its great, buy it without a thought and download the drummagick track from a site ...legally of course!!
