Having been bored of general student genres of music entering my second year (september2006) a friend suggested that i listen to gogol bordello. Having accumulated an ipod full of samey dnb and hiphop i needed something interesting and catchy to perhaps overt my musical attention to something a bit more alternative. Voi-La Intruder

Disappointingly, I wasn't too impressed with this album.
The melodies and gypsy-like accompaniments are very catchy and are perfect for dancing to (in 'Passport' especially), but the singers Borat-like voice irritates me a little.
For me, the best track on the album is 'Start Wearing Purple', the melody is addictive & I love the comical feeling to it.
However I wasn't impressed by tracks such as 'Mussolini Vs. Stalin', it has a very calm, almost stunning intro, but that's all this song is - an intro - I started disliking it when the singer's voice kicked in.

I really wanted to like this album, but it didn't match up to how I thought it would be. I love the gypsy element, but that's it. :(

Multi Kontra Culti Vs. Irony

Just seen Gogol in the Wedgewood rooms and still cannot get over what I saw! They are an absolutely unbelievable band and it really is a crying shame that they are not enormous now. Eugene Hutz is the greatest frontman in music today and the energy is like nothing you've ever seen I assure you. One listen to Baro Foro and you'll be won over!

It opens with the thrash-gypsy title track: two minutes twenty of sheer pleasure and self indulgence.
A reworking of the classic Avenue B is followed by the Manu Chau penned "Mala Vida".
My favourite is the inspirationally titled "Strange Uncles from Abroad", a tale of family influence across generational and continental divide.

Wonderlust King

There's a bit of gypsy in everything Gogol Bordello performs, but "Wonderlust King" takes it a few steps further. And this raucously frenetic little tune is a deliciously solid sampling of their gypsy-punk style... now if only the second tune lived up to the first's excellence.

"Back in the day yo as we learned/A man was not considered to... fully grown/Has he not gone beyond the hills/Has he not crossed the seven seas..." Hutz bawls out over a strummed guitar, only to be joined by a chorus of male voices yelling, "Yeah, seven seas at LEAST!"
