I listened to this album once straight after buying it, then it quickly got hidden amongst my CD collection and I couldn't bear to listen to it again... Finally I came to my senses and forced myself to put it on again. I couldn't believe what I had missed out on in the year that I had ignored it. As with all great music, the album just grows and grows on me.
I love the whole bluesy/urban folk thing they have going in this album. It's such an amazing debut album, and such mature song crafting for their age. Sometimes they really remind me of the Beatles, the way they assemble the melodies and different instruments. The music also has a nice raw authentic organic feel to it, yet the sound quality is very good for the time, which is ... Read More:

Bring it on was an incredible debut from Gomez. Most bands fail to match or exceed expectations in this scenario, and Gomez, in my opinion are no exception.. But they have come so darn close, and have stepped in a different direction, which is probably what baited the critics.
It's not an album you can get into straight away, and as I always say, the best albums always take many many listens to appreciate to their entirety.
We haven't and still won't get another indie album that rivals the quality of this or 'Bring It On' for a long time to come.

If, like me, you like your music original and by bands a little bit different from the normal rubbish out there, with a lead singer who can REALLY sing and who just write really good songs; then buy this album. You wont be disappointed.
Release Date October 12, 1994
This was Gardiner's first recording of the Vespers, before he was won over to the sound of original instruments. So, trumpets and trombones of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, instead of cornetts and sackbuts. It simply isn't as good as Gardiner's later version, recorded "live" at San Marco, Venice, which simply knocks spots off every other version in existence. However, the performance is pretty good (with the exception of Robert Tear whom I can't stand in any shape or form) and you get a lot of music for your money here, not only the Vespers but also a collection of other sacred pieces, all well performed. Worth it as an introduction to sacred music of this period, to see whether you want to go further.

Undoubtedly the poorest Gomez album to date. It really lacks the energy of the earlier stuff. As a long time fan, I was really looking forward to this, but it seems that they got out of the wrong side of the bed the morning they started recording this. It really screams "we want to please as many people as possible, and sell more records in America" through it radio-friendliness. There are a few good tracks on the album, but it is far outweighed by some poor showings in paricularly the very chronic girlshapedlovedrug, which resonates of some commercial one-hit wonder pop band trying to make it!!
If this is the only Gomez album you own, don't fret, the earlier stuff it absolutley rockin'. Buy that and you won't be sorry.
I only hope that for the bands next ... Read More:

Why do so many people criticise this album? It is not the same as their stunning debut and follow up, Bring It On and Liquid Skin. But who wants a third album of the same? Taken on its own this album does need a few listens to get into, but you then realise it is a slow-burning classic. It can be a tad weird, but the basic three-part harmony style and the experimental instrument selection give Gomez away in each song. This really is a fantastic album, buy it! To finish, a tip: if you liked the first two Gomez albums and are struggling with this one, listen to the offcuts album 'Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline' which gives some insight into the bands' experimenting with their own tunes and other bits and pieces. It helps to link the original Gomez sound with their ... Read More:

Unlike most people, this was my first Gomez album. The first song I heard from them was Catch Me Up (though it turned out I'd heard Bring It On and Shot Shot before) but that was the first song I really payed attention to. I didn't like it at first but the song intreiged me and grew. Then I heard Silence and bought the album on the spot. Wow.
The first song I heard was Do One, and after hearing only Tom Grey sung songs this came to me as something as a shock. It was crazy, it was bizzare, it was fantastic. Track after track I was amazed. Gomez had warped me for life.
Nothing Is Wrong and Sweet Virginia are some of the most beautiful and fantastic songs my ears have ever fallen upon. Split The Difference definately results in being in my Top 5 favourite ... Read More:

To anyone who tells me that classical music is an "antique" medium, I show them the Kronos Quartet. I disagree slightly with yer man's other review here who suggests tghat this is a novelty record - of course it's not! it's brimming with blistering summer, salty fire and sharp lime spirits, fast paced stomping and life. Life, life it's so full of it it's exploding like good humoured fireworks.
I've never had such good fun listening to a quartet, and can you belive my viola playing mother bought this for me for my birthday. She really must have been thinking it was someone else!
This CD is a real joy. Buy it, and listen to it on a blistering summer's day.
