Unchained Melodies: The Complete Singles Recordings 1955-1978

A good question, that.... there is nothing here that hasn't been issued before, either on "The World of the Goons" (which had all the Decca titles together with tracks by Ray Ellington and Max Geldray) and various Peter Sellers and/or Spike Mlligan compilations. Yet this is the FIRST time ALL the Goon singles have been gathered on one disc and as such is a must for the car or for relaxing to (or both, buy two!)
I have the original 10" LP of Unchained Melodies, and "The World Of The Goons", and the Peter Sellers Collection (where the EMI tracks came out in 1990!) and I still bought this with my own money!
If you are new to the Goons, this is a must buy.
If you aren't new to Spike & Co. it's still worth considering as a unique ... Read More:

The Very Best of the Goons and Spike Milligan

This three disc CD compilation released by EMI includes the same episodes included on their other Goon CDs (The Goons volumes 1 and 2). It also contains various great songs and sketches by Spike Milligan so overall it is good value for money.

Goon Show episodes include Tales of Old Dartmoor, Dishonoured, Tale of Men's Shirts, Missing Number 10 Downing Street, Red Fort, Robin Hood and His Merry Men. Dishonoured and Tale of Men's Shirts are widely considered as two of the Goons best episodes.

The shows are rather edited, noticeably the musical interludes are removed which may upset some people. I think BBC releases are considered to be better quality but that is reflected in the price.

Ying Tong Songs

I'm old enough to be familiar with most of these songs. I have some ancient cassette versions of Goon shows etc with some songs on. I hoped these would be a better copy than I have already. Not so.
The songs sound as if they have been recorded from a short-wave radio using a microphone at the end of a drainpipe! They are badly distorted and phasey sounding. I think this is due to an over enthusiastic "engineer" with a noise reduction plug-in on Sound Forge or similar. This has been done to lower the tape hiss from the original BBC recordings. If these programs are used too aggressively, then the result sounds as I have described. The BBC would not be amused (as I am not). I'm surprised that Hallmark can get away with this sacrilege.

The World Of The Goons

... BUT it has been superceded by the Decca release "Unchained Melodies"
That has all the Goons' singles on including the Parlophone cuts (released and unreleased!) and if it is the Goons, not the musical bridges you like from the shows that might suit you better.
Don't get me wrong I have this disc too and it is an excellent disc...
but had I had the chance of getting Unchained Melodies when I bought this I probably wouldn't have.

Licker's Last Leg

Difficult to describe, but worth a listen. It is quality stuff.

If Kyuss is 5 stars, QOTSA is 4 stars, then this is three, and we all need a bit of 3. Right?

Splottside Rocksteady

shootin' goon are an exelent cardiff band and are heading for big things - i've seen them a few times live and they really get the croud up.
splootsiderocksteady is an exelent cd and all the tracks are worth listening to over and over again
this cd is one of my favorite ska cds and it easyly stands shoulder to shoulder with bands like reel big fish and less than jake
im sure if they were from america shootin' goon would be up there with the likes of reel big fish and less than jake but sadly the ska scene isnt quite as big over here in the uk as it is in the usa
i advise everyone who likes ska to buy this - and every one that likes punk to buy this - and everyone who has money to waste to buy this cd!!!
