No better introduction to the music of Gordon Lightfoot available. The selection spans most of his career, right up to the most recent stuff. It's toe-tapping stuff, filled with great melodies and gritty, down-to-earth lyrics about life and love. Highlights for me were the haunting If You Could Read My Mind, the perfect Beautiful and Canadian Railroad Trilogy, an epic folk tale about the birth of the Canadian railway. I loved this disc.

If You Could Read My Mind

On the strength of hearing the title track on the radio, this is where my introduction to Lightfoot's music started. His distinctive voice and easy presentation captured the mood of music that I have loved to this day. Stand out tracks are Poor Little Alison, Saturday Clothes, Love's Return and of course the brilliant cover of Me & Bobby McGee. As a whole, the album is very strong. Although, I have since bought his back catalogue, this is where it started for me and it never fails to put me in a glorious mood.

If you like, say, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs (a la 'We're all alone'), perhaps a bit of John Martyn - that sort of thing - possibly with a bit of blue grass guitar mixed with an almost norweigian skiffle type feel, then you will love this, actually even if you don't, you'll love this anyway. from the rolling moments of the first few bars right til the end, coupled with the everso slightly twangy, but heart warming (and very different) vocal, it is a gorgeous adventure into Gordon's world. If you like Gordon Lightfoot you'll enjoy this "best of" except.... it doesn't have his best ever song on it - "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

How can such a glaring ommission be allowed?

By the time I'd bought this album on vinyl, I was already a hopeless fan of Lightfoot. From the earlier work of "Read My Mind" & "Don Quixote" I continually waited in great expectation of his next release. Such was the quality of his outpouring during this period, that he rarely let you down. He was always a free spirit with a love of the sea, but always managed to keep his subject matter fresh, due in the main to the wonderful chord structures he employed in his melodies.

Old Dan's Records

This is an album i never tire of. I have favorite tracks particularly it's worth belevin and miners child and same old obsession. All the tracks are good and if you like Gordon lightfoot at all you will like this album. Go on buy it!

Gord's Gold, Vol. 2

Worth it for one track - the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The moody, ethereally sad song about the ship that was lost with all hands while carrying iron ore across the Great Lakes is an epic. The clinging sadness is reminiscent of other major musical poems like June Tabor's Heroes of Suvla.

GL is one of Canada's stars - like Neil Young and Leonard Cohen - but unlike them has in some respects been eclipsed by the more recent Bryan Adams and Ms Dion. He deserves to be "rediscovered" especially in the light of the newer wave of singer songwriters.... after all, GL did blaze a trail in folky rock.
