La Revancha Del Tango

This always reminds me of (very) expensive bars, clubs and restaurants in Istanbul and Ankara where well heeled Turks would go and, well, pose I suppose (although that's never been a problem for Turkish women). So, you get the idea - this is an album 'designed' (or even destined) to be played in plush, soulless bars and clubs. It has a trippy-tango-lounge vibe going on and I do like the use of the accordion and violins and the subtle beats and electronic under current. The first three tracks are excellent, with the highlight being the opener "Queremos Paz". It's an interesting, worthwhile and inoffensive concept and should appeal to fans of the band 'Pink Martini' who, I would suggest, are non too distant cousins of Gotan Project. I'd recommend ... Gotan's first collection "La Revancha del Tango" was an irresistibly gut-grabbing, loin-twitching, bass-loping, dub-tango hybrid winner from the first listen, invariably prompting responses of "What it THIS? I LOVE it".

"Lunático" is a much less in-your-face proposition. I could barely wait to get it out of its packaging, but then I struggled to get into the music itself. Mostly less meaty than "La Revancha" and more varied - tricksier, even. It took some chance random plays on the iPod to insinuate a couple of the songs into my ears again. Then I wanted more. Badly. And now I rate it just as more-ish as "La Revancha".

This Cd created a sensation in 2002 when it was selected by BBC radio listeners as the best CD of the year. Ever since literally every piece of music on this CD has been used to advertise programs or products on British Television. hat is unique about this USA version is the inclusion of a second disk containing a video promo produced for the release of Santa Maria De Buenos Aire as a single which was shot over 3 days in Paris in the neighbourhood of Tour Eiffel. It is in black and white and uses great innovative cameras and camera work. Most episodes where shot with 4 cameras running at the same time. The end result is a masterpiece of short film making. You absoltely must buy this version.

Before this album tango was not much appreciated and listened to by many young people. This CD brought a whole new generation of people into tango world. It also was good enough to be used by many TV stations in various ways and many advertisers used many of the tracks to promote interesting products. In short it made tango more accessible to the listeners who would otherwise not choose tango as their type of music. This particular version has an addes DVD which has a superb Black & white promo for Santa maria de Buenos Aires track. I highly recommend this Cd to all interested in lively & danceable music.

Inspiracion / Espiracion

I bought this album after hearing Santa Maria on Shall We Dance. I was not prepared for the offensive and abusive lyrics of Track 10 Al Shid. MATH. This album must in future contain a lyrics warning, where upon I would have purchase their other album. My main object in getting this album was to listen and dance to tangos, only half the album meets this desire. The rest is an eclectic mix of vocals, cafe noises and throbbing back beats of no use for my purpose. The best part of the album is the bonus CD, which is really good. I will try another album, but I shall read the reviews more carefully before buying.
