I was a bit disappointed with the album after having read all the glowing reviews on Amazon. The lyrics are good and the production is interesting but apart from William's blood and I'm crying the melodies are frankly boring.

So I've just moved home and my record collection is in complete disaray.
I want to listen to something before going on a big (and I mean big) night out but I can't find anything
Then I see this. I haven't listened to this for years. In fact I'm not sure I've lisened to it since I got it from a charity shop (where most of my vinyl comes from) about eight years ago.
It sounds wonderful. If you have this record I suggest that you put it on now.
Nothing needs to be said about Grace Jones, a woman whose image eventually overcame the music until all most people can remember is her attacking Russell Harty.
The music, however, is a dark slinky gem.
It undeniably pop. Sly and Robbie owe nothing to anybody and have worked ... Read More:

Grace Jones relativley short music career never really hit the heights of success it often deserved. Her first three disco albums, PORTFOLIO (1977), FAME (1978) and MUSE (1979) were fairly forgetable although they did spawn at least one memroable track per album - all of which make there way onto this definitive compilation of Grace Jones work. LA VIE EN ROSE, I NEED A MAN and DO OR DIE had that early Grace Jones disco sound which was quickly abandoned in 1980 prior to the release of one of her very best albums, WARM LEATHERETTE, which succesfully combined the sounds of New Wave, reggae, rock and funk. From the album was PRIVATE LIFE (a top 20 success in the U.K) which also is rightly included on this album as this by far is one of her greatest recordings. This ... Read More:

I remember listening to this when it came out, through earphones, the volume up very high and the lights turned out.....it scared the heck out of me!! Well, I was young and sensitive. Although there is seemingly very little of Miss Jones on this cd, her usual powerful vocal style still penetrates when it appears amongst the stunning effects from Trevor Horn. A couple of the tracks seem a little dated now but altogether still a fantastic collection of tracks, prose and mini-biography, the voice of Ian McShane is still goosepimply-rich and used to great effect.
I would think that true Grace Jones fans may be dissappointed with this cd, but I think that if it is the first one that you hear, as it was with me, and it then leads you on to the rest of her back ... Read More:

One might be tempted to call "Warm Leatherette" Grace Jones' debut album. She recorded three disco albums with Tom Moulton back in the late '70s, but none of them managed to give her a commercial breakthrough. This is by all means a truly phenomenal album by Grace. It's a mixture of genres. From rock to soul, and from new wave to country. And everything in between. It is mostly an album of covers, but Grace completely blows the originals out of the water. Her cover of the Normal's "Warm Leatherette" is stunning, and her cover of the Pretenders' "Private Life" makes the original seem completely irrelevant. But that is her ability. The ability to make each song completely her own. She is of course backed by the finest band in Jamaica, and that certainly helps her quite a lot. In ... Read More:

This is the CD I wanted...this is the best of Grace Jones. Forget her dizzy disco phase that preceded, and forget her sell out mainstream phase that followed - here we have all the best tracks from Grace Jones' collaborations with Sly and Robbie, where she produced her most dynamic, sensual and explosive music. Just listen to that tight-as-a-drum production on tracks like "Walking in the Rain", "Private Life" and "My Jamaican Guy", Grace's music has never been better.
I was also really pleased to see that this CD has given us the long versions of many of the tracks - previously only available on the cassette versions of the original LP's. But they cruelly decided against including the 12" of "Walking in the Rain" - probably because the vocal part was quite messed up on the ... Read More:

CAMP CAMP CAMP CAMP CAMP - and then some ! This album is just the gayest thing you'll ever hear for all the RIGHT reasons, and even though it's of it's time [1975 - 1977] it has dated very well indeed,
La Vie En Rose is superb and one of those rare occassions someone has had the balls to make a classic from a classic, nothing like La Piaf's version, it becomes itself and grows and grows with a great vocal from Grace. The production is great on side one with 3 tracks segued - all the tracks sound like they were made for 1977 gay clubs and bars but great FUN - the singles SORRY; THAT'S THE TROUBLE and [of course] I NEED A MAN are great.
This music is nothing like Grace was going to make a short time later [WARM LEATHERETTE NIGHTCLUBBING etc.] and she's almost a different artist here but ... Read More:

OK, I'm a bit carried away with my enthusiasm, but this album is jam-packed with a great deal of her earlier work!
I'm listening to it now, it just arrived.... I particularily like Ring of fire, All on a summer's night and She's lost control (this one has fab sound effects - beware of the car accident, especially!) - these 3 tracks are quite rare.
It's well-recorded and the order of the tracks is good. All her famous tracks are here - this CD won't disappoint.
So now I'm thinking: Will Miss Jones Grace us with another "Collection" of her later works, mid '80's to the present? Who knows... after all, this is the game that she perennially plays with us fans!
Lastly, the photos are good and the biography is very accurate.

Why can no-one get a Grace Jones compilation right? Despite it's 2CD length this is still short of that mark. CD1 does its best to put most of her early career in one place but, as is well known, the vast majority of this material is substandard gay disco Donna Summer rejects. The only real exception is her high melodrama version of La Vie En Rose - other covers are almost laughable given her appalling vocals. Of course things were to improve stratospherically with Warm Leatherette and Private Life - missing though is the soft and feathery French love song Pars. Nightclubbing is the only album to be done full justice here - although criminally Pull Up To The Bumper is abbreviated. The first side of Living My Life is here but nothing from the second nor the still yet to find its way onto CD full length version of ... Read More:
