The Message

by: Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five

Release Date February 26, 2008
"Don't push me, 'cos I'm close to the edge..."

In America, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the ones who turned the nation onto rap music and this album was the vehicle to do so.

Sure other raps songs had come before like "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and "The Breaks" by Kurtis Blow, but the single "The Message" coverted a lot of people to fans of rap music; not only in urban areas but also in the suburbs. Shortly thereafter, Run-DMC came onto the scene and rap exploded.

This album was the first successful rap album. Songs like "The Message", "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" and "Scorpio" blew up. These songs received heavy radio airplay and R&B chart success. (Critics didn't know how ... Read More:

Back To The Old School - Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel

by: Grandmaster Flash

Release Date April 15, 1999

I started DJ'ing with with Sugar Hill imports as a staple in my record bag from 1980 onwards.

The trouble with these retrospective GMF and the FF compilations is that in reality the important DJ influence of Grandmaster Flash only actually appears on a few of the early tracks included here. Too many of these ex-Sugar Hill Records compilations lead one to believe that he was involved in such big hits as "The Message" and "White Lines" - which he was not.

I think that the only track that really makes a mark is the seminal "Adventures......" - can you believe that was 1980 and basically mixing in real-time. Thankfully, since those genre busting days, Flash has cut his own niche and you can find them offered on Amazon. ... Read More:

Essential Mix: Classic Edition

by: Grandmaster Flash

Release Date May 07, 2002
I was really looking forward to this cd.
I have most of the tracks, but I thought Grandmaster Flash would really add something extra to them.
His mixing is SUPER SHY.
What happenned Mr. Flash?
Was it the record company executives or was it you?
Some mixes start with a lot of potential but the potential lasts 2 seconds. What a shame!

Grandmaster Flash Vs. the Sugarhill Gang

by: Grandmaster Flash

Release Date July 07, 1997
I bought this thinking that I'd get a definitive collection of the best work by these two great artists. It's not that the songs aren't great, it's just that the production of this compilation is atrocious. Several of the Flash tracks are cut short, "Pump me up" even just stops abruptly not even half way through. No doubt this has been done to cram them all on one of the discs. If you're after a collection by Flash, buy one of the others instead.

The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: Mixed By Grandmaster Flash

by: Grandmaster Flash

Release Date January 28, 2002
The seismic changes that created hip hop and rap are best heard in the context of a contemporary mix, and this album will have you on your feet instantly, wishing you'd been there when it first happened. A stellar collection, with few of the obvious choices; even Kraftwerk and YMO sound fresh in this context. And tracks such as Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" and Eddie Drennon's "Do What You Gotta Do" are fantastic discoveries, like superhits from a parallel universe. This album has the lot - soul, funk, r'n'b, hip hop, disco and rap - all in one beautifully melodic package.

The Sugarhill Gang Vs. Grandmaster Flash - The Greatest Hits - The Roots Of Rap

by: Sugarhill Gang / Grandmaster Flash

Release Date March 27, 2000
listening to this cd while driving and relaxing is great. the smoothness of both the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash is striking. I mean nowadays the only rappers close to this are 213 and Tha Dogg Pound (oh and TI and LL Cool J, to an extent).

Rappers delight is phenomenal, it just reaps of crasy ryhmes and a fantastic beat. I have to admit Rappers Delight and 8th Wonder are briliant songs. I have played it to a number of people who say they dispise rap and they almost all like listening to Sugarhill now, asking me to play it in my car to my mates and girlfriend alike.

A must for any hip hop fan, just like Tupac's Greatest Hits, Straight Outta Compton, Doggystyle and Dogg Food.
