On The Town was written in just seven months and was first performed in December 1944 - fully thirteen years before West Side Story - following the success of the ballet Fancy Free some years previous. The show deals with the very different ways three sailors spend their short stay of 24 hours in New York. Betty Comden and Adolph Green were brought in to write the book and lyrics, and the colloboration resulted in highly entertaining "Come Back to My Place" and "Carried Away" and the more mellow "Lonely Town". There are also the three big ballet numbers which show Bernstein at his symphonic best. Sweet Charity - First Complete Recording

I have never been able to work out why this CD is freely available but the OST Shirley Maclaine/Sammy Davis Jr version isn't. Surely that would be more popular? Surely someone else wants to hear it? But apparently not - it was released on vinyl, but not CD. In the meantime, there are a few other versions of Sweet Charity on CD, and this is the best. Bob Fosse's wife Gwen Verdon is a sweet singer, and conveys Charity's tarty/good-girl thing well. It's a great album, the songs are cool, funny, the version of Big Spender is pretty flawless. Rhythm of Life is one of the best songs ever, and this version misses the scat diversions of Sammy Davis Jr's version in the movie, but is still a great track. Cabaret - First Complete Recording

I have listened to all the Cabaret recordings and have seen the movie several times. Judi Dench is without a doubt the best Sally Bowles. She may not be classified as a singer but she brings something to a song that others do not.

I have listened to all the Cabaret recordings and have seen the movie several times. Judi Dench is without a doubt the best Sally Bowles. She may not be classified as a singer but she brings something to a song that others do not.
