Quite simply this is one of the best CD's of brass band playing I have heard (and I am a fan) A good selection of music that tends more to the light side of the repertoire (no big heavy test pieces here).
What sets this album apart is the fantastic playing - through out the whole CD the band are on top form and the final production is excellent.
My only gripe would be the lack of sleeve notes - but that doesn't stop it getting 5 stars.
Whether you are a die had band fan or have never heard a brass band get this album - you will not be disapointed!
Brass band fans I challenge you to find any recording with better Soprano Cornet playing!!!

A great collection of Christmas tunes, no 'overkill' on the arrangements. The only thing I would point out is that, there are very few hymns on this cd, Silent Night, Adeste Fideles, etc are all absent. Other than that a 'must have' cd for Yule Time.

Digitally remastered from old Pye recordings the effect is simply painful. I could not comment on what it may have sounded like on vinyl, but on CD the effect is lifeless, the bass part often sounds slightly out of tune, the arrangements are tedious, and multiple verses are often simply repeated (ad nauseam).
The selection of hymn tunes include many stock favourites, but the rendition would be worthy of a junior school band.
Perhaps the only reason for having it is to remind us how much better some other recordings can be.

The CD has an excellent audio quality so every instrument can be heard. Starting off with Forza del destino/Overture (otherwise known as music from the Stella advertisement) the CD continues with the classic Jerusalem. By the 4th track the music turns to the lively piece 'Dance of the tumblers' in which each section of the band get to play a fast moving mellody. For me the best track is the 14th with 'Rhapsody no 2'. A almost sombre track comes alive with cornets tripple tongueing their way through the second half.

Just a note to say I got the CD this morning.
WOW- It was well worth the wait.
What can you say about the band playing on the CD other than this was brass playing of the very highest quality - thank you wonderful Grimethorpe.
I was particularly emotionally, charged when Gresford was played. This was super playing. I have played this hymn many times and I always feel huge emotion when this hymn starts.
Thank you Julian for your disk notes which were very interesting reading. I never knew that Gresford came about due to the mining disaster.
Finally and most importantly - a very big thank you to SP & S for producing such a shining beacon of light and hopefulness when all around us is bathed in semi ... Read More:

I really enjoyed this CD. It's packed with brass band arrangements of classic British compositions and traditional tunes. I was particularly pleased by the track merely labelled "Greensleeves (trad)". This is not just another soppy rehash of the over-familiar melody, but actually an arrangement of Vaughan Williams' magnificent "Fantasia on Greensleeves". There is a wide variety of pieces covering all parts of Britain, and the whole thing ends with a dazzling version of Holst's Jupiter from "The Planets". Highly recommended!
