Guillemots are a very talented bunch, there's no question about that, but finding a direction for their creativity is evidently a problem, because this album is all over the place. While some people may revel in the diversity of this release, I can't help feeling that it lacks coherence as a result. Everything is thrown in here - rock, disco, funk, ballads, drum 'n' bass, obligatory plinky-plonky sounds... they're on their second album and, unfortunately, almost descending into self-made cliché. If I'd have been sequencing the album, I'd have probably left the immense, menacing 'Kriss Kross' until the very last track because, as the opening song, it is so brilliant, everything else on the album pales in comparison.

I only discovered the Guillemots earlier this year, and had actually never heard of them previously. I now know what I was missing.
This is a fantastic album; I love the addition of big band music with the more familiar, expected instruments. It's a sound in its own league with lyrics which actually have coherency, depth and meaning; a welcome change these days.
Overall, it's very relaxing, and ambient in style in some songs. Vocally, it sounds a little like David Gray, but in terms of instrumentals it reminds me of Nitin Sawhney to an extent. Both of which are compliments.
A very modest, understated, underrated album which I am glad to have stumbled accross.

This EP by the Guillemots is my first taster of this fairly new band. I say EP because that's how it is billed, I think correctly, because it is a collection of singles and other material recorded between 2003 and 2005 rather than being a collection of songs recorded with an "album" in mind.
However, I am going to call "From the Cliffs" an album - whilst not conceived as such it has been cleverly produced and has that magical cohesive quality of all the best albums: each song sits very neatly in its own place within the whole; you feel that changing the running order just slightly would detract from the overall enjoyment. Take the opening and closing songs, "Sake" and "My Chosen One", both sung beautifully to an unaccompanied piano - perfect ... Read More:

A great mix, a really cool collection of musical genres-something for everyone! Stand outs tracks for me come from Bjork, The Supremes and Roots Manuva which should give you a heads up on what to expect!
Highly recommended!

After seeing the video for this their latest single (released 29th March) I had to buy it. Possibly the most original and talented bands on the planet at the moment. I had the unusual luck of being able to catch them at their gig last night in my home town of Brighton and I was quite literally blown away. To describe the music type is so hard, but if you like a frontman with an incredible voice (Think a cross between Chris Martin & David Gray type voice,) but nothing like the same in terms of personality! Clear, crisp, orchestral, but also bang up to date, full of unexpected twists and turns in every song, elating, poetic, fantastic. Also what a lovely personable bunch they were after the gig. True egoless genius! Good luck guys....
