I've shopped on Amazon for about eight years now and in that time I've never posted a review. But I feel that Chinese Democracy would be a good start. I've listened to the full album on the offical GNR MySpace recently, shortly after it came out. I haven't bought it and probably will not be buying it. For the record, I love GNR. I don't have a problem with the current GNR consisting of only one original member (Axl Rose), but what I find ridiculous are the musicians who have joined GNR and play all the classic GNR songs as if they were their own! Their arrogance is worse than Axl's! To me, the current GNR are just a glorified cover band. Anyway, I digress, back to Chinese Democracy. Where do I start? Well, the opening track, the opening riff, ... Read More:

First off I'm 14 and have all the GN'R albums (including Spag Incident, ChiDem and Unplugged 1993 (which you will not find, anywhere).
Just don't bother buying this, I haven't but know all the songs and come on! Mr Brownstone! Rocket Queen! Nightrain! You gotta have Nightrain, Don't Damn Me, Locomotive, Estranged, Reckless Life, Pretty Tied Up, in fact just go out and buy Appetite and Lies, if you like them get the UYI double set, if Slash, Axl and Duff all tried to stop it being released then you know it's an embarrassment.
It is good Ain't It Fun made it though, so Slashy haha.

... and thus, inseperable.
I have a hell of a history with these Use Your Illusion albums, indeed with Guns N' Roses in general. "Appetite for Destruction" was the first `metal' album I ever heard, and it changed my life immediately. I actually first heard it while on stage in a school play. It's a strange story, and probably more interesting if I leave it at that. I actually heard it at a time when I didn't think there was any music I liked. As soon as I heard it, I knew that it was what I had been looking for.
Moving onto the Use Your Illusion albums, well I don't think there is any record I have heard more times than these. I've owned them on vinyl, tape and CD. There was one two week holiday when I went to Scotland with my parents, ... Read More:

Both are strong albums, but where as Vol.1 is in your face Hard Rock/Metal , this is more experimental, dare I say, progressive!
Estranged, Locomotive, Civil War are all GREAT, lengthy epics, with complex arrangements and musicianship.
A really strong, (still) modern sounding Rock album.

One of the most overrated albums ever. Why G n R were ever feted beats me. They were nothing special, just one of a long line of dire hair metal acts from Sunset Strip. G n R only differed in that they tended to rip off Aerosmith rather than Van Halen. Slash is a competent enough guitar player but he's added nothing to the canon of axemanship but Axl Rose has a voice that strips paint. Even if you allow for the hits as being half OK the other tracks are dismal, plodding sub Stones riffage.

The CD version has masses of customer reviews, but how good is the vinyl? Well the answer is it is a fantastic pressing on double 180g, and sounds amazing. The CD is pretty good but this is better, something that is not always true of vinyl versions. Someone who knows what they are doing has worked on this and it shows. Somewhat surprising as G'N'R vinyl was not that great previously - the Use Your Illusion albums are for example not very good on vinyl.
The sleeve is gatefold and the cover is about 100 times better than on the CD. Inside you get the wide Mao picture which is in the centre pages of the CD booklet, printed over with credits, but disappointingly no lyrics. The inner sleeves are plain back plastic lined.
The music? Well, you can read plenty of petty nit ... Read More:

This album has something for everyone (even racists, if you thing about "One in A Million"), but generally was partially opportunistic (releasing the EP - Live Like a Suicide) and another four acoustic tracks. How it would look to fans was very much parodied within the album cover which exploits the tabloid nature of their press at the time. The songs are all solid, even the acoustic version of "Your crazy" generally seems to work better than the electric version. 'Patience' is a fantastic song which, at the time really showed people some of the potential range and scope of the band. "Used to Love Her" is very tongue in cheek and reminds me of the feel of "No Expectations" by the Rolling Stones. Signalled the potential for the band which would be more fully explored in the (somewhat ... Read More:

It shows them at their BEST on songs like Out ta Get Me and Welcome to the Jungle and My Michelle is just awesome, but it also shows them at their most over the top bloated self-parodying selves on songs such as November Rain(a classic, no doubt, but GN'R were meant so save ROCK, not Elton John for christ's sake) and the totally ruined funk-fest of Move to the City, what the hell had they done to a song that used to rock in the early days and was now full of overblown horn solo's. Axl took the blame at the time, his crazy ego and all that, but Slash has since admitted it was his idea, not that this makes it okay though, it still sucks.
There's also the heavily supported rumours that Axl re-recorded many of his vocal parts for this LP because he is such a perfectionist, so ... Read More:

I bought this album as it was the last one I needed to complete my collection and I was impressed with the video for "Since I Don't Have You".
Unfortunately after that song the album turns very bad indeed with another 11 songs to trawl through. I have tried many times but can't get to the end.
A highlight of the album is Axl's funny English accent on "Down On The Farm". I don't know what to make of the song but it's very funny. I thought Nazareth's "Hair Of The Dog" might be quite good as the Britny Fox version is excellent. Sadly again I was dissapointed and it is the worst of the three versions available. Duff also sings on the album a few times and his voice is just bad. I hate his voice. Axl's the singer not you. One last irritating aspect of this album is not related to music ... Read More:
