Old Number One/Texas Cookin'

Among roughly two dozen CDs recently ordered, that are taking me more and more to the roots and outer reaches of country music, this one really sticks out most. It's two original albums packed onto one disk. Just having the first would well be worth the money. It's a debut of such monumental quality it really amazes, that it's gotten so little attention, especially because I really think it does get you hooked on the very first listening. Texas Cooking doesn't fully keep up, especially because the clarity of Guy's voice gets very slightly muddled in the production and it's not as distinctly Texan. Poor old Guy Clark - a career that in the 1970s started off with two killer albums thankfully still available (Old No. 1 & Texas Cookin') and has never quite surpassed that quality. However as with many fellow Texas troubadors, including Townes van Zandt especially, that does not mean his subsequent work is irrelevant or poor quality but just varies in consistency.

Which is what makes this latest offering a real find since it has Clark consistently doing what he does best, of taking everyday topics and with his worldly laidback vocals, observant lyrics and sparse backing and delivering an album of consistent gems.

Cold Dog Soup

Four and a half stars...

A playful and on occasion very witty album at last transcending tired C&W clichés that to some extent marred Guy Clark's earlier work (even though his talents still shone through).
Maturity brings detachment, and detachment is the key to this relaxed offering. The wryness of some of the lyrics is most refreshing. As importantly, the accompaniment is perfectly matched to the lyrics and never over-heavy (again, a blemish on most C&W).
A beautifully integrated work.
