Well if Scarlett Johannson can do it, why can't Zooey Deschanel, teaming up with singer-songwriter M. Ward, have a go as well? But whereas Scarlett went for an album largely based on cover versions, only three of the tracks on Volume 1 are covers (and one of those is the hidden track Swing Low, Sweet Chariot).

And, ahem, covering them first would give you a distorted view of the album as a whole. You Really Got a Hold on Me is superfluous at best and whilst the cover of the Beatles I Should've Known Better has some merit, it does come perilously close to pastiche and/or novelty. Luckily the majority of the self-penned tracks are a hell of a lot better.

Dark Light

HIM are one of my favourite bands because of the way they combine gloomy goth music with brilliant melodic vocals. I have all their albums so rushed to buy this when it came out. I was not disappointed. The album starts well with the impressive "Vampire heart" before moving on to the more pop influenced, but equally brilliant "Wings of a butterfly." These tracks are classic HIM with lyrics typically involving love, romance and death. The album builds with several other impressive tracks, most notably "under the rose" and "behind the crimson door." This is a typical HIM album, catchy and easy to listen to. Venus Doom

I don't think there'd be a single regret if you bought this, seriously.
It's basically number two on my list of their best albums (try Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights for their best)
I will admit that they haven't changed, but, to me, that is rather a good thing. I will never grow tired of hearing this or any other of their albums.
I think the only downfall to this album i Song Or Suicide, and that isn't really that much of a downfall. It's just one of those songs I can't seem to get into that well.
Yet again, it's not their best work, but it's so damn close.

Razorblade Romance

The most played HIM album I have out of all of them - This is just the best - If you, like me absolutely adore this band this album is definately one to add to your collection!! never will you be dissapointed by this one - Super fantastic - premo - the business!!

Digital Versatile Doom Live at The Orpheum Theatre XXXV11 A.S

I bought this for my daughter who has been an admirer of HIM for 9 years, and after the release of the fantastic "Venus Doom" there were high hopes for this CD/DvD release. To begin with the CD is brilliant, the recording is crisp and clear, plus the live playlist is a masterpiece a mixture of classic and new songs from "Your sweet six six six", "It's all tears" and "Killing Loneliness" to fresh songs such as "Passions killing floor", "Dead lovers lane" & the epic "Sleepwalking past hope" which sounds excellent live.Ville, Burton, Gas, Linde and Mige provide fantastic performances throughout every song.

Uneasy Listening Vol.2: Rarities

Well this is HIM's 2nd release of the more "rare" & some unreleased (officially) tracks, ok a fair few myself & I am sure most of you have heard previous to this album being released.

It's good to finally hear Buried Alive By Love (616 Version) most of us had only heard this in the CKY dvd with a backing over it which was annoying.

This album is still on a par with the 1st vol for producing some good all round HIM tracks but this time gave a good 11 tracks out of 14 that I haven't heard before a fair few more compared to the 1st vol I found.

Not a place to start if you haven't listened to HIM before or if you only own (or have heard) Love Metal or Dark Light, start with Razorblade Romance and absolute must of a HIM album ... Read More:

Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights

I got into HIM with their album "Love metal" and have since bought all of their other releases except this one. I was at first not interested in buying this CD because: there are few if any songs from this on any best of compilations, the band do not seem to play any of the songs from this album live and after reading an article about the history of HIM in a music magazine i read that this was a disappointing release which was given 5 out of 10. I asumed that this album was simply not upto HIM's high standards and therefore i decided to avoid this album and stick with the band's more recent and most popular offerings. Love Metal

quite a few years ago I picked this album up for £5 from a music store that was having a summer sale. Before that I'd never heard of HIM, Ville or any of his music. Up until then, I had no idea he even existed or that he was even from Finland. So, I bought this interesting looking album on the basis that I liked the album cover...

So, I got it home and started listening. After the last song faded out I was silent...almost in awe of how beautiful the album was. There is so much depth to his music and a lot of emotion that I Iike in my music. The interesting mix of gothic metal with a few pop and grunge rhythms make for a curiously interesting mix of sounds.

Uneasy Listening Vol.1: Rarities

I am a HUGE HIM fan, and was at best deflated when I listened to this album. I would say BUY IT if you, like me, wish to own all of their music and want to judge this album for yourself, but it is not as good as I hoped that it would be. Some tracks are ok, but the Buried Alive By Love acoustic version is pants. I hate to say this! (but it is true!)
